What is Jhulan Yatra and when is it in 2027?
Jhulan Yatra is the monsoon swing festival of Shri Radha Krishna. In Braj, the rainy season is the season of swings, when the groves turn green and Radha and Krishna are remembered swinging together. In Vrindavan, each temple places its deities on a flower-garlanded swing and the festival’s main celebrations happen in the evening, usually between the Sandhya Aarti and Shayan Aarti.
In 2027 the core festival runs for five days, from Thursday, August 12 to Tuesday, August 17. It begins on Shravana Shukla Ekadashi, known as Pavitropana Ekadashi and concludes on the full-moon night of Shravan Purnima, which is also Raksha Bandhan. Many traditional temples in Vrindavan begin an extended Jhulan cycle of about 13 days earlier, starting from Hariyali Teej. For what happens on that day, see our hariyali teej vrindavan guide. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour Packages or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Key temples and darshan timings
During Jhulan Yatra, temples are beautifully adorned with flower-garlanded swings. The timings below are as reported and typical, so confirm them with each temple before you travel.
Sri Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir (ISKCON Vrindavan)
Jhulan timing: evening onwards, typically 7:00 PM to 8:45 PM. Devotees are uniquely given the rare opportunity to gently pull the swing ropes of Sri Sri Radha Shyamasundar. Continuous mahamantra kirtan and special flower-themed decorations take place daily. It is a good choice for first-timers and families who want a participatory, kirtan-filled evening. Photography is restricted inside the temple building, so see our photography in vrindavan temples guide.
Shri Banke Bihari Ji Mandir
Jhulan timing: evening darshan hours from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM. Banke Bihari Ji swings on a magnificent, intricately designed swing. Because of the intense festival rush, the banke bihari temple maintains its signature Jhanki (curtain) style, where the veil is repeatedly drawn to manage crowd focus. Strict security guidelines are enforced during these heavy footfall days. Expect a short, intense glimpse and a very dense crowd.
Shri Radha Raman Temple
Jhulan timing: evening hours from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Famous for its strict, roughly 500-year-old Gaudiya Vaishnava ritual standards, the self-manifested deity of Radha Raman Ji sits on an exquisitely adorned swing. It offers an intimate, highly traditional and deeply classical Braj heritage environment and is a good choice if you want a quieter, more traditional evening.
Shahji Temple
Jhulan timing: special festival hours, 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. This architectural marvel is famous for its Basanti Kamra (Spring Room), which houses beautiful Belgian chandeliers and twisted marble pillars. The room remains locked nearly all year and opens exclusively twice a year, once during Basant Panchami and once during the Jhulan Yatra festival, which makes it a must-visit on your itinerary.
Jhulan Yatra timings at a glance
Temple | Jhulan timing (reported) | What stands out |
ISKCON Vrindavan | About 7:00 PM to 8:45 PM | Pull the swing ropes of Radha Shyamasundar; continuous mahamantra kirtan |
Banke Bihari Ji Mandir | 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM | Intricately designed swing; Jhanki curtain style; very heavy rush |
Radha Raman Temple | 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM | Self-manifested deity; classical, intimate, traditional setting |
Shahji Temple | 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM | Basanti Kamra with Belgian chandeliers opens only twice a year |
Practical tips for 2027 travel
Reach 45 minutes early. Monsoons in Vrindavan are humid and festival evenings draw massive crowds. Aim to arrive at the temple area about 45 minutes before the evening window opens, so you can move through the narrow access lanes smoothly. See our is vrindavan crowded today guide.
Pick one main temple each evening. The four temples have overlapping evening windows and the lanes are slow. Choose one main temple each evening and add Shahji’s early window only if you are staying nearby. Check our mathura vrindavan temple timings guide for regular hours.
Plan your local commute. Major vehicle access is restricted near temple paths during peak festival seasons. Use local e-rickshaws to complete the final transits. See our how to commute in vrindavan guide.
Watch for monkeys. Shrines around narrow lanes, like Banke Bihari and Shahji Temple, have highly active local monkeys. Guard your sunglasses, phones and bags closely. See our is vrindavan safe guide.
Pack for the rain. Carry a light raincoat or compact umbrella, wear non-slip footwear and protect phones and documents in a waterproof pouch. Wet lanes are slippery in a dense crowd.
Book early. Hotels and guest houses fill up during the festival days and Raksha Bandhan on August 17 adds travel pressure. See our hotels near prem mandir vrindavan guide and for seniors, our vrindavan wheelchair accessible guide.
How to take swing darshan well
Swing darshan is short, so a little preparation goes a long way. Go with the aim of receiving the sight and the music, not of securing a perfect view.
Arrive early and stay calm. The 45-minute early arrival is not a luxury. It gives you time to move through the narrow lanes and find your place before the evening window opens.
Stand where the line puts you. Pushing forward in a festival crowd is risky for you and for others, especially children and seniors.
Keep the camera away. Photography is banned or restricted inside most temples. Take the darshan with your own eyes and photograph only exteriors and public lanes.
Join the kirtan. At ISKCON, the continuous mahamantra kirtan is part of the evening and the chance to gently pull the swing ropes of Radha Shyamasundar is something the temple offers devotees.
Respect the ritual. At Banke Bihari, the curtain is drawn repeatedly, so do not wait for a long still view. At Radha Raman, the setting is traditional and quiet, so keep your voice low.
Dress for the rain. Carry a light raincoat, wear non-slip footwear and protect your phone and papers in a waterproof pouch.
Which temple suits you
Traveller | Best fit | Why |
First-timers and families | ISKCON Vrindavan | Participatory evening with kirtan and swing ropes |
Devotees who want the famous darshan | Banke Bihari Ji Mandir | The most famous swing, but the heaviest rush |
Quiet, classical-minded travellers | Radha Raman Temple | Traditional, intimate setting |
Architecture and heritage lovers | Shahji Temple | The Basanti Kamra opens only twice a year |
Seniors and those with limited mobility | A calmer temple, on a less crowded day | Avoid the narrow Banke Bihari lanes at peak |
A suggested way to spend the five days
This is a planning suggestion, not an official schedule. Confirm every temple’s timing before you go.
August 12 (Pavitropana Ekadashi). The core festival begins. A good evening for ISKCON, with its kirtan.
August 13. Radha Raman, for a classical, quieter evening.
August 14. Shahji Temple, in its early window, to see the Basanti Kamra, then a calm dinner.
August 15 or 16. Banke Bihari, if you are ready for the crowd. Reach early and keep your group close.
August 17 (Shravan Purnima, Raksha Bandhan). The festival concludes on the full-moon night. Travel and crowds are heavy, so keep this day flexible.
If you have only one evening, choose one temple and give it your full attention.
What visitors commonly find
A few honest, commonly shared observations, to set your expectations. Jhulan evenings are crowded, humid and slow. The narrow lanes around Banke Bihari and Shahji Temple are the hardest to move through and the monkeys there are active. The temples with a calmer setting, such as Radha Raman and ISKCON, tend to leave visitors with the feeling of having had time with the deity. Those who choose one temple a night, reach early and carry little usually say the festival felt full. Those who tried to cover several temples in one evening usually say it felt rushed.
Plan your Jhulan Yatra visit with a local guide
Jhulan evenings are where local knowledge saves the day. We can book your stay and transport for the whole festival, plan one temple per evening around the timings, arrange a Braj-born guide who knows the narrow lanes and the early arrival window and suggest a calmer plan for seniors and families. Darshan is free. A shared day tour starts from around ₹1,499 per person and you can see our vrindavan tour package and mathura vrindavan tour itinerary pages to plan.
