What is Charan Darshan at Banke Bihari?
The Akshaya Tritiya Charan Darshan at the banke bihari temple in Vrindavan is among the most auspicious and rarest spiritual events in Hinduism. It is the only day of the year when the lotus feet of Thakur Banke Bihari Ji are shown to devotees. On every other day, His feet remain fully hidden beneath heavy robes and flowers.
Devotees believe that catching a glimpse of His feet on this day grants the same spiritual blessings as visiting Him every single day of the year. That belief is the reason pilgrims travel from across India and why Akshaya Tritiya is the most crowded day in the Banke Bihari calendar. The sacred darshan routine
The celebration is divided into two distinct phases of worship, one in the morning and one in the evening.
Morning: Charan Darshan (the lotus feet)
Thakur Ji is dressed in a magnificent royal form, known as Raja Bhesh. For a limited time, the base of His robe is lifted so that devotees can see His divine feet. The feet are visible only for brief intervals during the morning shift, so every moment counts and the queue builds hours before the doors open.
Evening: Sarvang Darshan (the full body form)
In the evening, Thakur Ji sheds most of His heavy garments and wears only a lightweight dhoti. His entire form is lavishly coated in a cooling paste of fresh sandalwood, known as Chandan Seva, to beat the summer heat. It offers an incredibly rare view of His whole form, which is normally hidden under layers of clothing.
Why only on Akshaya Tritiya?
According to regional legends, the tradition dates back centuries to the temple’s founder, the saint-musician Swami Haridas Ji Maharaj. Akshaya Tritiya represents eternal, undying abundance and devotees believe that on this day the Lord reveals His foundation to humanity.
There is also a reason the feet are kept private for the rest of the year. The powerful gaze of Banke Bihari Ji’s idol is said to overwhelm onlookers, which is why His eyes are normally shielded with a curtain every few minutes. In the same spirit, His feet are kept private to protect the profound sanctity of the deity’s physical form. Akshaya Tritiya is the exception.

Guidelines for travelling devotees
If you are planning a pilgrimage to Vrindavan for this special day, keep these essential factors in mind.
Expect massive crowds. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims descend on the narrow alleys of Vrindavan. The local administration enforces strictly controlled one-way walking routes, barricades and vehicle restrictions several blocks from the temple zone. Cabs usually stop around 300 m away, so plan for a walk. See our is vrindavan crowded today guide.
Respect the time constraints. The feet are visible only for brief intervals during the morning shift. Stand in line hours before the doors open and check the day’s temple schedule in our mathura vrindavan temple timings guide.
Book accommodation and transport early. Hotels and guest houses in Vrindavan and Mathura book out several months in advance. Secure your lodging and transport well ahead of time. See our hotels near prem mandir vrindavan guide and our how to commute in vrindavan guide.
Keep the camera away. Photography is banned inside Banke Bihari. Keep your phone zipped away in the darshan area. See our photography in vrindavan temples guide.
Think about seniors and wheelchair users. The crowd and the barricaded routes are hard going. If someone in your group has limited mobility, read our vrindavan wheelchair accessible guide first.
Stay safe. Hold your group together, keep valuables minimal and watch your phone and glasses near the monkeys. See our is vrindavan safe guide.
