Meerut to Vrindavan distance: the routes

There are three main road routes from Meerut to Vrindavan; here they are side by side:

In short: the quickest way from Meerut to Vrindavan is the 200 km route via the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and NH 44, about 3 hours 27 minutes; the Yamuna Expressway route is 209 km and about 3 hours 33 minutes, almost as quick. The plain NH 34 route is a similar distance but much slower at about 4 hours 28 minutes, so it is best avoided.

Going back, the routes and times are much the same; the main options are these:

In short: from Vrindavan the quickest way back to Meerut is about 3 hours 27 minutes, either the 207 km route via the Yamuna Expressway or the 205 km route adding the Eastern Peripheral Expressway. The 199 km NH 34 route is the shortest in distance but much slower at about 4 hours 15 minutes, so once again the expressway is the sensible choice.

Which route should you choose?

• For the quickest drive: the Eastern Peripheral or Yamuna Expressway. Both expressway routes take about 3 hours 30 minutes, whether the Eastern Peripheral Expressway with NH 44 coming to Vrindavan or the Yamuna Expressway going back; they carry you smoothly around the Delhi region.

• Do not be fooled by the shorter NH 34. NH 34 is a similar or even slightly shorter distance, but it runs through towns and traffic and takes about an hour longer, over 4 hours; the extra few kilometres on the expressway are well worth the time saved.

• Let the traffic fine-tune the choice. On the day, live traffic around the Delhi region decides between the Eastern Peripheral and Yamuna Expressway routes; a driver who knows the roads will pick the quicker.

How to travel between Meerut and Vrindavan

There are several ways to make the journey; the options at a glance:

• By car or taxi (best). The most comfortable and flexible way, about 3 hours 30 minutes by the expressway routes, door to door; ideal for families, elders and pilgrims with luggage and easily arranged as part of a Braj tour.

• By train. Trains connect Meerut to Mathura Junction, usually via Delhi or Ghaziabad; from Mathura, Vrindavan is about 15 km by road. The new Namo Bharat Rapid Rail also links Meerut swiftly to the Delhi side, from where you can continue. Check the current timetable and book ahead.

• By bus. Buses run from Meerut towards Delhi and on to Mathura, from where you take a local ride to Vrindavan; it is the budget option, though slower and with a change.

• By air. The journey is too short to fly; the nearest airport to Vrindavan is Delhi. The road or a train is the sensible way from Meerut.

The expressway choices: why to avoid NH 34

The single decision that shapes this journey is expressway versus plain highway; a few points to know:

• The Eastern Peripheral Expressway. This ring road lets traffic from the Meerut and Kundli side bypass the heart of Delhi and combined with NH 44 it gives the fastest run to Vrindavan, about 3 hours 27 minutes.

• The Yamuna Expressway. The smooth, fast expressway from the Greater Noida side down to the Mathura and Vrindavan region; it is the natural spine going back and almost as quick coming.

• Why NH 34 is slower. NH 34 is a similar distance but a plain highway through towns and junctions, so it takes about an hour longer; the small extra distance on the expressways buys you a much smoother and faster drive.
