By air: the fastest way (fly to Delhi)

Flying is by far the quickest way from Mumbai; the essentials:

• Fly Mumbai to Delhi. Many daily direct flights connect Mumbai (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj airport) with Delhi (Indira Gandhi International), taking about 2 hours; Delhi is the practical airport for Vrindavan.

• Then drive to Vrindavan. From Delhi airport it is about 150 km and 3 to 3.5 hours by road, mostly on the smooth Yamuna Expressway, to Vrindavan; a pre-arranged car makes this leg easy.

• Other airports. Agra, about 55 km from Vrindavan, has limited flights and the new Noida (Jewar) airport is emerging closer to Braj; but for most travellers Delhi has the widest choice of flights.

By train: the cheapest way (direct to Mathura)

By road: the long drive

Driving from Mumbai to Vrindavan is a long haul that few pilgrims undertake, but it is possible; the essentials:

• The distance and time. About 1,300 to 1,400 km, roughly 24 to 28 hours of driving, so it needs at least one overnight halt on the way, often near Indore, Kota or Jaipur depending on the route.

• The new expressway. The Delhi to Mumbai Expressway, opening in stages, is steadily cutting this drive; as more sections open it will make the road trip far quicker than before.

• Best for road-trippers only. The drive suits those who enjoy a long road journey with stops, not those simply wanting to reach Vrindavan; for most, a flight or train is far better.

By bus: the budget option

Long-distance buses do run from Mumbai towards the Braj region, usually via Agra or with a change at Delhi, taking around 28 hours or more. It is a budget option but a very long and tiring one over such a distance, so for most travellers an overnight train is both cheaper in comfort and kinder on the body. If you do take a bus, choose a reputable operator and an air-conditioned sleeper coach and plan the last stretch to Vrindavan from wherever it sets you down.

• From Delhi airport. About 150 km and 3 to 3.5 hours by road down the Yamuna Expressway; a pre-arranged car is the smoothest option after a flight.
