Fatehpur Sikri to Mathura: the routes

Mathura is the nearer of the two, reached most directly on NH 44. The options, with approximate distance and time:

The plain NH 44 route is the quickest and most direct at about 63 km and under an hour and a half; the Fatehpur Sikri Road option is much the same. The NH 21 and Mathura-Bharatpur Road route is a little longer and slower. Times are approximate and depend on traffic; please check live maps before you set off.

Fatehpur Sikri to Vrindavan: the routes

Vrindavan lies a little beyond Mathura and here the Yamuna Expressway offers a fast alternative. The options, with approximate distance and time:

Interestingly, the fastest route to Vrindavan is via the Yamuna Expressway at about 90.5 km and 1 hr 36 min, quicker despite being longer, because the expressway is smooth and fast; the direct NH 44 route is the shortest in distance at about 76 km and only a little slower. Choose the expressway for comfort or NH 44 for the shorter run. Times are approximate; check live maps before you travel.

Which to visit first and the route choice

Coming from Fatehpur Sikri, a simple plan works well:

• Mathura first. As the nearer city and the birthplace of Krishna, Mathura is the natural first stop, about 63 km away; see the Janmabhoomi and the Yamuna ghats before moving on.

• Then Vrindavan. From Mathura, Vrindavan is only about 14 km further, so the two are easily done together; end your day there for the evening among its temples.

• Or straight to Vrindavan. If your heart is set on Vrindavan first, the Yamuna Expressway carries you there quickly and you can see Mathura on the way back.

Best ways to travel

For this short hop, the choices are simple:

• By car or taxi (best). By far the easiest way, about an hour and a half door to door, with the freedom to see Mathura and Vrindavan together and to reach the edge of the old town. Most visitors to Fatehpur Sikri already have a car or taxi from Agra, which continues to Braj easily.

• By bus. Buses run from the Agra and Fatehpur Sikri area towards Mathura, from where you continue to Vrindavan by local transport; the budget option, though slower and less direct than a car.

• By train. There is no convenient direct train for this short hop; if travelling by rail you would go from Agra to Mathura Junction, so for Fatehpur Sikri itself a car is far simpler.

Combining Fatehpur Sikri, Agra and Braj

Fatehpur Sikri is rarely visited alone; it sits about 40 km from Agra and is usually seen alongside the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort and from there Braj is a natural next step. It makes one of the most rewarding short circuits in north India, pairing Mughal heritage with Krishna's devotion:

Once in Braj, the temples of Krishna await; the essentials:

• October to March is the most pleasant season for both the monuments and the temples, with cool, comfortable weather.

• See Fatehpur Sikri in the cooler morning, then drive to Braj for the afternoon and the evening aarti at the ghats.

• The Fatehpur Sikri monument is ticketed, so carry ID proof and check its current timings and any weekly variations.

• In Vrindavan, cars are kept out of the old-town lanes, so park at the edge and take an e-rickshaw for the temples.
