• Via Maharaja Surajmal Road and Barsana Road: about 21.2 km, roughly 36 minutes, a slightly longer variation in similar time.

• Via Barsana Road, alternate: about 20.3 km, roughly 39 minutes, another close option.

For most travellers the direct Barsana Road route is the one to take, being the shortest and usually the fastest at about 20 km and 36 minutes. All the options are short drives of well under an hour through the countryside of the western Braj. Barsana to Govardhan by road

In the other direction, Barsana to Govardhan is about 20 km, roughly 40 minutes, again with a few options.

• Via Barsana Road: about 20.3 km, roughly 41 minutes, the most direct route.

• Via Barsana Road and Maharaja Surajmal Road: about 22.5 km, roughly 42 minutes, a slightly longer variation.

• Via Barsana, Goverdhan and Maharaja Surajmal Roads: about 31.0 km, roughly 51 minutes, a longer alternative, useful only if the direct roads are congested.

So Barsana to Govardhan is much like the reverse, about 20 km and 40 minutes by the direct Barsana Road, with a longer 31 km alternative if needed. The direct route is the one to take unless traffic dictates otherwise. As with the outbound trip, a hired car or auto covers it easily in under an hour and a maps app or local driver will choose the best route at the time. Besides a private car, there are other ways to travel between Govardhan and Barsana.

• Auto or shared auto: cheaper, serving the local route between the western-Braj towns, though less comfortable over the distance.

• Bus: local buses serve the western-Braj towns, an economical if less direct option.

Which route is best?

For both directions, the direct Barsana Road route is the best, being the shortest and usually the fastest, about 20 km and 36 to 41 minutes. The alternatives via Maharaja Surajmal Road are only slightly longer, while the 31 km option in the Barsana-to-Govardhan direction is a longer detour to use only if the direct roads are congested. So take Barsana Road unless traffic on the day suggests otherwise, which a maps app or a local driver will judge.

The best way overall is a hired car or a western-Braj tour, which takes the direct route and lets you combine Govardhan, Barsana and Nandgaon in one smooth day, with the darshan, the climbs, the parikrama and the timing around the midday closure handled. About Govardhan

Govardhan is one of the holiest places of Braj, revered for the sacred Govardhan Hill, Giriraj, which, by the tradition, Krishna lifted upon his little finger to shelter the people and cattle of Braj from the wrath of Indra's storms, a beloved leela of his boyhood. About Barsana

Barsana, about 20 km from Govardhan, is revered, by the tradition, as the town of Radha, the beloved of Krishna and her childhood home, set among hills crowned by temples. Its chief temple is the hilltop Shri Radha Rani temple, also called the Ladli Ji temple, reached by a climb of steps, one of the very few temples anywhere dedicated principally to Radha and the devotional heart of the town. Barsana is bound to Nandgaon, the town of Krishna 9 km away, above all through the famous Lathmar Holi.

At the Lathmar Holi, the world-famous stick Holi, the women of Barsana playfully beat the men of Nandgaon with staves, in a joyous re-enactment of the play of Radha and Krishna, drawing huge crowds; the next day the play returns at Nandgaon. Combining Govardhan and Barsana on one day

Govardhan and Barsana are best seen together on one western-Braj day, being only about 20 km apart.

• A common plan: Govardhan in the cool early morning, for the hill, the parikrama or the kunds; then Barsana in the later morning and afternoon, for the climb to the Radha Rani temple.

• Add Nandgaon, only 9 km from Barsana, the town of Krishna, for the fuller western-Braj trio.

• Start from Mathura or Vrindavan, about 25 to 50 km away, making a full day out and back.

• Plan around the midday temple closure, with darshan in the morning and the late afternoon.
