Ghaziabad to Barsana: the routes

There are two main ways to make the drive from Ghaziabad to Barsana. The options, with approximate distance and time:

The Eastern Peripheral Expressway and NH 44 route is the fastest, even though it is a little longer in distance at about 152 km, because it avoids the Delhi traffic; the plain NH 44 route is slightly shorter at about 148 km but can be slower through the built-up stretches. Barsana to Ghaziabad: the return

The return, Barsana to Ghaziabad, offers a few ways. The options:

For the return too, the NH 44 and Eastern Peripheral Expressway combination is the fastest, at about 151 km and just under three hours, again by skirting Delhi; the plain NH 44 return is the shortest in distance but the slowest in time. As with the outward drive, treat these as guide figures and check live traffic before you leave.

The Eastern Peripheral Expressway route

The road that makes this journey easy for Ghaziabad is the Eastern Peripheral Expressway:

• A ring road around Delhi. The Eastern Peripheral Expressway is a six-lane, access-controlled expressway that rings the eastern side of Delhi, from Kundli in the north through the Ghaziabad and Greater Noida area to Palwal in the south, letting NCR traffic bypass the city entirely.

• It saves the Delhi traffic. For a Ghaziabad traveller, taking the expressway and then NH 44 avoids the heavy congestion of central Delhi, so the route is the fastest even though it is a little longer in distance.

• A toll road. It is a toll road with electronic tolling, so keep your FASTag active; the smooth, fast run is well worth it on a long drive to Braj.

Best ways to travel

From Ghaziabad, the choices for reaching Barsana are:

• By car or taxi (best). About three hours by the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and NH 44, with the freedom to break the journey and to reach the foot of the Barsana hill; an easy day trip or a relaxed overnight. Fares vary, so ask us for a live quote.

• By train and road. Ghaziabad is a major railway junction and trains connect it to Mathura Junction, from where Barsana is about 45 to 50 km by road; for a long journey the train is restful and you continue to Barsana by taxi. Check current times on IRCTC.

• By bus. Buses run from the NCR towards Mathura, from where you reach Barsana by local transport; the budget option, though slower and less direct than a car.

Reaching the Radha Rani Temple and what to see

Once you reach Barsana, the darshan asks a short climb, which is part of its charm. The radha rani temple barsana, the Shriji or Ladli Ji temple, crowns Bhanugarh hill above the village, reached by a flight of stone steps, with fine views over Braj as you rise; palanquin bearers are available for those who cannot manage the steps and vehicles stop at the foot of the hill. The sacred govardhan hill lies on the way, a natural addition.

Best time to visit and tips

• October to March is the most pleasant season for the drive and the hill climb, with cool, comfortable weather.

• Take the Eastern Peripheral Expressway to skirt Delhi's traffic and keep your FASTag active for the expressway and highway tolls.

• Radhashtami and the Lathmar Holi are the greatest times to be in Barsana, magnificent but hugely crowded; plan and book far ahead.

• Start early to climb to the temple before the midday closing and wear comfortable footwear for the hill steps.

• Agree the fare for a taxi, an e-rickshaw or a palanquin beforehand, as first-time visitors are often quoted high.
