Kota to Braj distance: an overview
From Kota, the well-known city of southern Rajasthan on the Chambal, the land of Krishna lies about 387 to 398 km to the north-east: Mathura, the birthplace, about 387 km and Vrindavan, the town of his childhood, about 398 km, each roughly six and a half to seven hours by road. Most of the drive runs on the new Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, marked NE 4, which passes by Kota, making the journey smooth and fast. Being under 400 km, it is a manageable haul, doable in one long day or, better, with an overnight; and as Kota is a major railway junction, the train is a fine option too. This guide gives the routes both ways to both cities; and if you would like the drive and the darshan arranged, a mathura vrindavan tour with Experience My India can plan it.
From the ground (Gurudutt): For my guests from Kota, the new expressway has made the journey to Braj much easier, about seven hours of smooth driving. You can do it in a long day if you start early, but I always suggest an overnight so you reach Bihari Ji fresh. Kota has fine trains too, straight to Mathura Junction, which many prefer. However you come, from the Chambal to the Yamuna, Braj awaits with open arms. Radhe Radhe.
Kota to Mathura: the routes
The routes from Kota to Mathura, with approximate distance and time:
Route | Distance | Time (approx) |
Via NE 4, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and NH 21 (fastest) | About 387 km | About 6 hr 32 min |
Via NE 4 and the Bharatpur Road | About 399 km | About 6 hr 45 min |
Via NE 4 | About 416 km | About 7 hr 27 min |
The NE 4 and NH 21 route is the fastest and shortest to Mathura, at about 387 km and just over six and a half hours; the routes by the Bharatpur Road or the plain expressway are a little longer. NE 4, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, carries most of the way.
Kota to Vrindavan: the routes
The routes from Kota to Vrindavan, with approximate distance and time:
Route | Distance | Time (approx) |
Via NE 4, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and NH 21 (fastest) | About 398 km | About 6 hr 45 min |
Via NE 4 and the Bharatpur Road | About 407 km | About 6 hr 50 min |
Via NE 4 | About 425 km | About 7 hr 38 min |
Vrindavan, about 14 km beyond Mathura, is about 398 km from Kota by the fastest route, again on NE 4 and NH 21 and about the same time. Times are approximate and depend on traffic; please check live maps before you set off.
The return: Mathura and Vrindavan to Kota
The returns often run by the Lalsot-Kota Mega Highway. Mathura to Kota:
Route | Distance | Time (approx) |
Via NH 21, NE 4 and the Lalsot-Kota Mega Highway (fastest) | About 385 km | About 7 hr 12 min |
Via NH 21 and NH 52 | About 428 km | About 7 hr 25 min |
Via NH 52 | About 438 km | About 9 hr 4 min |
And Vrindavan to Kota:
Route | Distance | Time (approx) |
Via NH 21, NE 4 and the Lalsot-Kota Mega Highway (fastest) | About 397 km | About 7 hr 28 min |
Via NE 4 and the Lalsot-Kota Mega Highway | About 401 km | About 7 hr 34 min |
Via NH 52 | About 448 km | About 9 hr 19 min |
For both returns, the routes by NE 4 and the Lalsot-Kota Mega Highway are the fastest, at about 385 to 397 km; the plain NH 52 is longer and slower. Treat these as guide figures and check live traffic before you leave.
The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and the route
The road that carries this journey is the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, marked NE 4, which runs by Kota:
India's longest expressway. The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is a vast new eight-lane, access-controlled expressway connecting Delhi with Mumbai through Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, passing by Kota; it is among the longest expressways in the country and has cut travel times greatly.
Kota's road to Braj. As Kota lies on the Delhi-Mumbai corridor, the expressway is the natural, fast road towards Braj, joined near the Braj end by NH 21 or the Bharatpur Road; on the return, the Lalsot-Kota Mega Highway links back to Kota.
A few practical notes. It is a toll road with electronic tolling; as it is still being completed in places, keep your FASTag ready and check the current open sections before the drive.
Where the road reaches the Braj end, our agra to vrindavan distance guide covers the final leg towards Mathura and Vrindavan.
Best ways to travel: road and rail
For this manageable haul, Kota gives you good choices:
By car (flexible). About six and a half to seven hours on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, doable in one long day if you start early, or, more restfully, with an overnight; smooth and fast on the expressway. Fares vary, so ask us for a live quote.
By train (a strong choice). Kota is a major railway junction on the main lines, so good trains connect it to Mathura Junction, the railway station for both cities, about 14 km from Vrindavan; for a journey of this length the train is restful and easy and a favourite for Kota travellers. Check current trains on IRCTC.
By bus. Buses run from Kota towards the Braj region and Delhi; the budget option, though slower and less direct than the car or the train.

What to see in Braj, best time and tips

Best time. October to March is the most pleasant season for the drive and the darshan, with cool, comfortable weather; the great festivals are magnificent but very crowded.
Tips. Take the train or plan an overnight if you can, so you reach the temples fresh; keep your FASTag active for the expressway tolls; and in the old towns, park at the edge and take an e-rickshaw for the temple lanes.
See the krishna janmabhoomi, dwarkadhish temple and braj yamuna ghats and leela sites in Mathura and the banke bihari temple, prem mandir vrindavan and iskcon temple vrindavan in Vrindavan.
