Banke Bihari Shringar and Rajbhog Aarti: an overview
The daily worship of Shri Banke Bihari Ji unfolds in a rhythm all its own and two aartis mark the morning: the Shringar Aarti, when Thakur Ji is adorned with fresh flowers and jewels and the Rajbhog Aarti, when a sumptuous midday meal is offered before the Lord rests. Knowing their timings, which change with the season, helps you plan your darshan well. This guide gives the exact timings, the meaning of each aarti, the temple's darshan hours and the temple's unique Jhanki custom. If you would like your darshan arranged, we can plan it as part of a mathura vrindavan tour with a local guide.
This guide covers the banke bihari temple Shringar and Rajbhog aartis in full: the Shringar Aarti and its timing; the Rajbhog Aarti and its timing; the daily aarti timings at a glance; the Jhanki tradition; the darshan hours and how to plan; and combining Banke Bihari with the other temples of Vrindavan.
From the ground (Gurudutt): The two things I always tell my guests about Banke Bihari are: come in the morning for the Shringar darshan when Thakur Ji is freshly dressed in flowers and jewels, because it is the most beautiful sight of the day; and do not linger too long expecting a steady view, because of the Jhanki, the curtain that is drawn again and again every few minutes. First-time visitors are sometimes surprised, even a little disappointed, when the curtain closes just as they settle in, but that is the whole tenderness of it, the Lord gives darshan in loving glimpses. Finish your morning darshan before the Rajbhog Aarti at noon, because the temple then closes for the afternoon. And remember there is no daily Mangla Aarti here; the day opens with the Shringar.
Shringar Aarti: the morning adornment and its timing
The Shringar Aarti is the morning aarti of Banke Bihari, offered right after the shringar, the loving adornment of Thakur Ji with fresh flowers, fine garments and jewels, so that the Lord is revealed in his full morning beauty. It is the first aarti of the day, for the temple has no daily Mangla Aarti and it is one of the most beautiful darshans at Banke Bihari.
Its timing changes with the season: in summer the Shringar Aarti is at about 8:00 AM, shortly after the temple opens at 7:45 AM and in winter it is at about 9:00 AM, shortly after the winter opening at 8:45 AM. So the Shringar Aarti is the morning adornment aarti, at about 8:00 AM in summer and 9:00 AM in winter. So arrive a little before it. We present the seva with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
Rajbhog Aarti: the midday food offering and its timing
The Rajbhog Aarti is the midday aarti at which the rajbhog, a sumptuous and lovingly prepared meal, is offered to the child-form of Krishna, before the temple closes for the afternoon rest of Thakur Ji. It brings the morning darshan to its close.
Its timing too changes with the season: in summer the Rajbhog Aarti is at exactly 12:00 noon, preceded by a brief closing of the doors for the bhog offering from about 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM; in winter it falls within the 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM window, before the morning session closes. So the Rajbhog Aarti is the midday food-offering aarti, at noon in summer and in the noon-to-1 PM window in winter. So it ends the morning darshan. We present the seva with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
The daily aarti timings at a glance
The two daily aartis of Banke Bihari, with their summer and winter timings, are given below; the seasons change with the temple calendar, so confirm on the day.
Aarti | Summer | Winter |
Temple opens (morning) | 7:45 AM | 8:45 AM |
Shringar Aarti | About 8:00 AM | About 9:00 AM |
Rajbhog Aarti | 12:00 noon (bhog closing 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM) | Within 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM |
So the morning darshan runs from the opening, through the Shringar Aarti, to the Rajbhog Aarti at midday, after which the temple closes for the afternoon and reopens in the evening. For the full seasonal schedule and the other temples, see our mathura vrindavan temple timings guide and confirm on the day, as hours vary. So plan your visit within the morning window or for the evening darshan.
The Jhanki tradition of Banke Bihari
One custom sets the darshan at Banke Bihari apart from almost every other temple: the Jhanki. Rather than continuous open viewing, a curtain is pulled across the deity every few minutes, so that darshan is given in repeated glimpses. By the tradition, this is done out of loving care, for the gaze of Shri Banke Bihari Ji is held to be so tender and powerful that continuous eye contact could overwhelm the devotee; the Jhanki lets the darshan be taken safely, in loving glimpses.
So do not be surprised or disappointed, when the curtain closes just as you settle before the Lord; it will open again in a moment and that rhythm is the very tenderness of Banke Bihari. So the Jhanki is a unique and beloved custom of the temple. We present this belief as the cherished tradition, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
Darshan hours and how to plan your visit
Because the temple closes after the midday Rajbhog Aarti for the afternoon rest, the morning session is the main window for a calm darshan: roughly from the 7:45 AM opening to noon in summer and from the 8:45 AM opening to about 1:00 PM in winter, with the Shringar Aarti soon after opening. The temple reopens for evening darshan and aarti, whose hours vary by season, so confirm them locally. Our banke bihari vip darshan page has details of darshan and sewa arrangements and our how to commute in vrindavan guide covers reaching the temple through the lanes.
A few honest tips: arrive a little before the aarti; expect the Jhanki glimpses; keep your belongings secure; note that photography is restricted inside; and finish before the Rajbhog closing if you come in the morning. On weekends and festivals the crowds are far larger. So plan around the aarti and closing times and come early for a calmer darshan of Banke Bihari.
Combining with Vrindavan's temples
A morning at Banke Bihari pairs naturally with the other temples of Vrindavan: the radha raman temple nearby in the old town, the magnificent prem mandir vrindavan and the iskcon temple vrindavan, along with Nidhivan and Keshi Ghat and Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna, at the krishna janmabhoomi temple.
