Vrindavan, Barsana and Mathura: A Guide to the Three Holy Towns of Braj

By Gurudutt, Experience My India·26 August 2026

Vrindavan, Barsana and Mathura

Quick Answer

Vrindavan, Barsana and Mathura are three of the holiest towns of Braj, the land of Krishna, and together they hold the heart of the Radha and Krishna story. Mathura is the birthplace of Lord Krishna; Vrindavan, about 12 to 15 km away, is where he played his childhood leelas; and Barsana, about 45 km from Vrindavan, is the beloved town of Radha. Pilgrims often visit all three together, with Mathura and Vrindavan easily seen in a day or two and Barsana added on a wider Braj trip. This guide tells you what each town is famous for, how far apart they are, and how to see all three.

The three holy towns of Braj: an overview

Braj, the land where Lord Krishna lived his earthly leelas, gathers its greatest glory in three towns: Mathura, where he was born; Vrindavan, where he played his childhood pastimes; and Barsana, the beloved town of Radha, his eternal consort. To visit Vrindavan, Barsana and Mathura together is to follow the whole arc of the Radha and Krishna story across the very ground where devotees believe it unfolded and it is one of the most cherished pilgrimages in all of India. This guide introduces each town, shows how they connect and how far apart they lie and how to see all three; and if you would like it arranged, a mathura vrindavan tour package with Experience My India can guide you through every one with reverence and ease.

From the ground (Gurudutt): I was born in this land, so let me share how I think of these three towns. Mathura is the beginning, the birthplace; Vrindavan is the play, the leelas of the child Krishna; and Barsana, up on its hills, is the town of our Radha Rani, where the love that is the soul of Braj is most felt. Many guests see Mathura and Vrindavan first, so close together and add Barsana for Radha's darshan, often with Nandgaon nearby. Take all three with an open heart. Radhe Radhe. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour Package  or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Mathura: the birthplace of Krishna

Mathura, on the banks of the Yamuna, is one of the seven holy cities of India and the birthplace of Lord Krishna, born in a prison cell to Devaki and Vasudeva. It is the oldest and most historic of the three towns, alive with temples, ghats and the daily rhythm of pilgrimage. The essentials of Mathura:

  • The birthplace itself. The Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi, with the sacred prison cell where the Lord is believed to have been born, is the heart of any visit to Mathura.

  • The great temple. The Dwarkadhish temple, Krishna as the king of Dwarka, is Mathura's most vibrant temple, full of colour and devotion.

  • The river. Vishram Ghat, the chief of Mathura's ghats on the Yamuna, where the evening aarti is a beautiful sight.

See the shri krishna janmabhoomi temple, the shri dwarkadhish temple and the braj yamuna ghats and leela sites at Vishram Ghat; Mathura is only about 12 to 15 km from Vrindavan, so the two are naturally seen together.

Vrindavan: the land of Krishna's leelas

Vrindavan, a short way from Mathura, is where the child Krishna played his enchanting leelas among the gopis and the cows and it is today the most temple-rich town of Braj, with thousands of shrines old and new. The essentials of Vrindavan:

  • The beloved heart. Banke Bihari, the most beloved temple of Vrindavan, where the darshan of the Lord is given in brief, tender glimpses.

  • The marble marvel. Prem Mandir, the great white marble temple, luminous at night with its light and fountain show.

  • Calm and kirtan. The ISKCON Krishna-Balaram temple, known for its early morning aarti, kirtan and calm; and Keshi Ghat on the Yamuna for the evening aarti.

See the beloved banke bihari temple, the magnificent prem mandir vrindavan and the iskcon temple vrindavan. Remember the main temples close for a few hours at midday, so plan your darshan for the morning or evening; our mathura vrindavan temple timings guide keeps the current hours.

Barsana: the town of Radha

Barsana, about 45 km from Vrindavan and set among low hills, is the beloved town of Radha, daughter of Vrishabhanu, whose divine love for Krishna is the very soul of Braj. It is quieter and more rural than Mathura and Vrindavan and deeply dear to devotees of Radha Rani. The essentials of Barsana:

  • Radha's temple on the hill. The Shri Radha Rani temple, also called the Ladli Ji temple, crowns a hill above the town, reached by a climb of steps, with lovely views over Braj.

  • Radha's mother and Krishna's love. Kirti Mandir, dedicated to Radha's mother Kirti and Maan Mandir, linked to the leela of Radha's loving pique, are cherished spots on the Barsana hills.

  • The famous Holi. Barsana is renowned for its Lathmar Holi, a joyous, colourful festival in the days before the main Holi, drawing pilgrims from across the land.

See the shri radha rani temple barsana, the kirti mandir barsana and the maan mandir barsana; Krishna's own town of Nandgaon, with the shri nand mahal nandgaon, lies only about 8 km away and is often visited with Barsana. We hold Radha Rani and her town with deep reverence.

How the three towns connect: distances

The three towns lie close within Braj; the approximate distances between them:

Route

Approx distance

Approx time by road

Mathura to Vrindavan

12 to 15 km

30 to 45 min

Vrindavan to Barsana

45 to 50 km

1 to 1.5 hours

Mathura to Barsana

42 to 45 km

1 to 1.5 hours

Barsana to Nandgaon

8 to 9 km

20 to 30 min

Mathura and Vrindavan are the close pair, easily seen together, while Barsana is a little further out on the western side of Braj. For the exact routes and times, our vrindavan to barsana distance guide covers that leg in detail.

How to visit all three together

Because they lie close within Braj, all three towns can be woven into one pilgrimage; the usual ways:

  • Mathura and Vrindavan in a day. The close pair is easily seen in a single busy day or better across two relaxed days, with the birthplace and the great Vrindavan temples.

  • Add Barsana on a wider Braj trip. Barsana, with Nandgaon, is best added as its own half-day or day, often together with Govardhan on the western side of Braj.

  • The full circuit over more days. To see Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana, Nandgaon, Govardhan and Gokul without rushing, allow a longer Braj yatra of several days.

Our govardhan barsana tour pairs Barsana with Govardhan in a day, our mathura vrindavan tour covers the close pair over two days and the braj 84 kos yatra takes in the whole of Braj; our mathura vrindavan tour itinerary helps you shape the days.

Best time to visit and the great festivals

Braj is beautiful all year, but three great festivals bring these towns most alive:

Festival

Where

What it marks

Janmashtami

Mathura and Vrindavan

The birth of Lord Krishna, the greatest festival

Radhashtami

Barsana

The appearance day of Radha Rani

Lathmar Holi

Barsana and Nandgaon

The joyous, colourful Holi of Radha's town

October to March is the pleasantest season for travel and darshan. The festivals are glorious but very crowded, so book far ahead and expect large gatherings; for a calmer visit, choose an ordinary week in the cool season.

Tips and how to plan your visit

  • See Mathura and Vrindavan together, then add Barsana with Nandgaon on the western side of Braj.

  • Plan darshan around the midday temple closing, morning and evening, at Vrindavan and Barsana alike.

  • Barsana's Radha Rani temple involves a climb of steps up the hill, so wear easy footwear and allow time.

  • October to March is the best season; the festivals are grand but very crowded, so book ahead.

  • Dress modestly and remove leather before temple hills; carry water for the Barsana climb.

  • A car with a guide makes the Barsana and Nandgaon leg far easier than public transport.

Getting between the towns is easiest by car; our how to commute in vrindavan guide covers local transport within Vrindavan.

We arrange guided tours of Mathura, Vrindavan and Barsana with a comfortable vehicle and a Braj-born guide who knows the temples, their hours and the stories behind them. A shared day tour starts from around ₹1,499 per person, with darshan free at the temples. Message me on WhatsApp at +91-7302265809 to plan your visit to the three holy towns of Braj.

"We booked the Same Day Govardhan Barsana Tour and wanted to cover the two important pilgrimage towns without staying overnight. The itinerary worked really well because Barsana and Govardhan are naturally suited to a western Braj circuit. We visited Shri Radha Rani Temple in Barsana, climbed the hill for darshan and then explored the nearby sacred places. We also had time for Govardhan before returning. The guide's local knowledge made the day much easier, especially with the temple timings and the hill climb."

"Our 2 Days Mathura Vrindavan Govardhan Barsana Tour Package was a great choice for our family. We started with Mathura, visiting Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi and Dwarkadhish Temple, then spent proper time in Vrindavan at Banke Bihari, Prem Mandir and ISKCON. On the wider Braj circuit, we covered Govardhan and Barsana, including Radha Rani Temple. We liked that the itinerary did not treat Barsana as just another sightseeing stop. The guide explained its connection with Radha Rani and suggested visiting Nandgaon along with Barsana."

"We chose the 3 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package because we wanted a relaxed Braj pilgrimage rather than trying to finish everything in one busy day. We spent time in Mathura, Vrindavan and Barsana, and also added Govardhan and Nandgaon. The extra time made a big difference because we could plan temple visits around the midday closures and still enjoy the evening atmosphere. Barsana was particularly special for us. Visiting Radha Rani Temple, Kirti Mandir and Maan Mandir helped us understand why Barsana is considered such an important part of the Radha and Krishna story."
