Karnal and Vrindavan: an overview
Karnal, the well-known city of Haryana on the Grand Trunk Road and Vrindavan, the town of Krishna on the Yamuna, are joined by one of the easier drives to Braj from the north, about 286 to 301 km and roughly 4 hours 30 minutes, much of it on fast expressway. As with any journey from the Karnal side, the trick is crossing the Delhi region and the quickest routes drop down NH 44 and then take the Yamuna Expressway or one of the peripheral expressways, to skirt the capital. This guide gives every route in both directions with its distance and time, all the ways to travel, how to cross Delhi and what awaits you in Vrindavan; and if you would like it all arranged, a mathura vrindavan tour package with Experience My India can meet you and guide your Braj days.
From the ground (Gurudutt): Karnal is close enough that my guests from Haryana sometimes ask about a day trip; I tell them it can be done, since it is only about four and a half hours each way, but with the temple hours and the driving it makes a long day, so an overnight is far sweeter. Start early down NH 44, use the Yamuna Expressway to slip past Delhi and you will reach Vrindavan by late morning with time to rest before the evening darshan. Radhe Radhe. Karnal to Vrindavan distance: the routes
There are three main road routes from Karnal to Vrindavan; here they are side by side:
Route | Distance | Driving time | Via |
Fastest | 286 km | About 4 hr 27 min | NH 44 and Yamuna Expressway |
Alternative | 298 km | About 4 hr 32 min | NH 44 and Eastern Peripheral Expressway |
Alternative | 301 km | About 4 hr 40 min | NH 44 and Western Peripheral Expressway |
In short: the quickest way from Karnal to Vrindavan is the 286 km route via NH 44 and the Yamuna Expressway, about 4 hours 27 minutes; routes using the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (298 km, about 4 hours 32 minutes) or the Western Peripheral Expressway (301 km, about 4 hours 40 minutes) to skirt Delhi are only a little longer and can be quicker if the direct crossing is congested.
Vrindavan to Karnal distance: the routes
Going back, the routes and times are much the same; the main options are these:
Route | Distance | Driving time | Via |
Fastest | 284 km | About 4 hr 33 min | Yamuna Expressway and NH 44 |
Shortest | 281 km | About 4 hr 44 min | Yamuna, Noida-Greater Noida Expressway and NH 44 |
Slower | 298 km | About 4 hr 52 min | Western Peripheral Expressway and NH 44 |
In short: from Vrindavan the quickest way back to Karnal is the 284 km route via the Yamuna Expressway and NH 44, about 4 hours 33 minutes; the shortest in distance is the 281 km route adding the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, about 4 hours 44 minutes, while the Western Peripheral Expressway route is a little longer at about 4 hours 52 minutes. The Yamuna Expressway with NH 44 is the sensible spine either way.
Which route should you choose?
For the quickest drive: NH 44 and the Yamuna Expressway. In both directions the combination of NH 44 and the Yamuna Expressway is the fastest, about 4 hours 27 minutes to Vrindavan and about 4 hours 33 minutes back, on fast expressway for much of the way.
To skirt a congested Delhi: the peripheral expressways. The Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways let you bypass the city rather than cross it; they add only a little distance and can be quicker when the direct crossing is busy, so keep them in mind on a heavy-traffic day.
Check the Delhi crossing. Almost the whole difference between routes is how you get past Delhi, so the best choice depends on the traffic on the day; a driver who knows the roads will read it and pick well.
Check live traffic before and during the drive, since conditions around Delhi decide more than anything which route is quickest.
How to travel between Karnal and Vrindavan
There are several ways to make the journey; the options at a glance:
By car or taxi (best). The most comfortable and flexible way, about 4 hours 30 minutes by NH 44 and the Yamuna Expressway, door to door, with a rest stop of your choosing; ideal for families, elders and pilgrims with luggage and easily arranged as part of a Braj tour.
By train. Trains connect Karnal to Mathura Junction, usually via Delhi; from Mathura, Vrindavan is about 15 km by road. Check the current timetable and book ahead, especially in the festival seasons.
By bus. Buses run from Karnal towards Delhi and on to Mathura, from where you take a local ride to Vrindavan; it is the budget option, though slower and with changes.
By air. There is no direct flight for so short a hop; the nearest airport to Vrindavan is Delhi, so flying is not practical for this journey. The road or a train is the sensible way.
If you are coming by rail, our tundla to vrindavan distance guide covers the nearby railheads and the last leg into Vrindavan and our how to commute in vrindavan guide covers getting around once you arrive.
Crossing Delhi: the expressway choices
Since Delhi lies between Karnal and Vrindavan, how you cross it decides your time; the choices to know:
Down NH 44, then the Yamuna Expressway. The fastest routes take NH 44 down from Karnal towards the Delhi region, then join the Yamuna Expressway on the Greater Noida side for a smooth, fast run into the Mathura and Vrindavan area.
The Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways. These ring roads let traffic bypass the heart of Delhi, to the east and the west; they add a little distance but can save time when the city is congested, which is why they appear among the routes.
Let the traffic decide. On a clear day the direct crossing with the Yamuna Expressway is quickest; on a busy day a peripheral expressway may win. Check live traffic and be ready to switch.
Carry cash or a FASTag for the tolls and check the current route on the day, as the expressway links around Delhi continue to be improved.
