Vrindavan trip cost at a glance (2-day comfortable trip)
Who is travelling | Cost per person (2 days) | Why |
Solo traveller | About ₹2,300 to ₹3,800 | Higher per head, as the room and transport are not shared. |
Couple (2 people) | About ₹2,000 to ₹2,800 each | One room shared, private transport split two ways. |
Family of 4 | About ₹1,500 to ₹2,200 each | Most economical band; costs split four ways. |
Family of 6 | About ₹1,400 to ₹2,000 each | Best value per head; room and car split six ways. |
Rock-bottom budget | About ₹500 per person per day | Dharamshalas, local food stalls and shared e-rickshaws. |
The short answer: what a Vrindavan trip costs
For a comfortable 2-day Vrindavan and Mathura trip, budget roughly ₹2,000 to ₹4,000 per person for your time in Braj, if you travel independently or with a local group tour. That covers a clean room, local transport in the towns, a shared or private car for the outstation leg to Govardhan and Barsana, simple vegetarian meals and incidental costs; the temple darshan itself is free. The figure moves within that range with the season, the hotel class and, above all, your group size, since the room and the car are shared costs. Only the ready-made commercial packages, with flights and hotels bundled, climb to ₹9,500 to ₹35,000 and beyond; those are rarely necessary for a Braj trip. To plan the two days, see our mathura vrindavan tour itinerary and for getting around, our how to commute in vrindavan guide. Cost by group size: solo, couple and family
The single biggest factor in the per-person cost is how many of you share the room and the car:
Solo traveller: about ₹2,300 to ₹3,800 for two days. You carry the whole room and transport cost yourself, so your per-head cost is the highest; a dharamshala bed and shared autos bring it right down, while a private room and car push it up.
Couple: about ₹2,000 to ₹2,800 each. You share one room and split a private car for Govardhan and Barsana two ways, so the per-person cost drops nicely; this is a popular, comfortable band for a couple.
Family of 4: about ₹1,500 to ₹2,200 each. One of the most economical ways to travel, as the room (or two rooms) and the car split four ways; a family of four gets real comfort at a low per-head cost.
Family of 6: about ₹1,400 to ₹2,000 each. The best value per person, as the car and the rooms split six ways; a family of six, in two or three rooms and one larger vehicle, travels very economically, roughly ₹8,400 to ₹12,000 for the whole group for two days in Braj.
Rock-bottom budget: around ₹500 per person per day. Staying in dharamshalas or ashrams, eating at local food stalls and the temple prasad and using only shared e-rickshaws and autos, a pilgrim can keep the cost to about ₹500 a day; this is the devout, simple way many Brajwasis and sadhus travel.
All of these exclude the cost of reaching Mathura from your home city, which is separate and depends entirely on distance, as the package section below explains.
Where the money goes: the expense breakdown
The main costs of a Braj trip, with typical ranges:
Expense | Typical cost | Notes |
Accommodation: dharamshala or ashram | ₹300 to ₹800 per night | Simple, clean, devotional; the cheapest option, often near the temples. |
Accommodation: budget to 3-star hotel | ₹1,200 to ₹3,000 per night | A comfortable room; rates rise sharply on weekends and in festival season. |
Local transport: shared e-rickshaw or auto | ₹10 to ₹50 per ride | For getting around within Vrindavan and Mathura; very cheap. |
Outstation car: Govardhan, Barsana, Gokul | ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 total | A shared or hired private cab for the day trips outside the towns; split across the group. |
Food and prasadam | ₹300 to ₹600 per person per day | Mostly simple local vegetarian meals, prasad and sweets. |
Temple darshan | Free | Free at all the standard temples; never pay a tout for “special darshan.” |
So a couple sharing a ₹1,800 room, splitting a ₹2,000 car, eating for ₹500 each a day and using a few ₹30 rickshaws will spend very close to the ₹2,000 to ₹2,800 per-person band above. Hotel rates are the biggest variable, so the season and the day of the week matter; see our vrindavan crowd calendar guide for when rates and crowds peak.
Sample 2-day budgets
Three realistic worked examples for the time in Braj, excluding travel to Mathura:
A couple, comfortable (about ₹4,000 to ₹5,600 total). One budget-to-3-star room for two nights, a private car for the Govardhan and Barsana day, local rickshaws and good vegetarian meals; roughly ₹2,000 to ₹2,800 per person. Comfortable and easy, with no corners cut.
A family of four, value (about ₹6,000 to ₹8,800 total). One or two rooms, one car shared for the outstation legs, local transport and meals; about ₹1,500 to ₹2,200 per person. Strong comfort for a low per-head cost.
A family of six, best value (about ₹8,400 to ₹12,000 total). Two or three rooms, one larger vehicle (such as a tempo traveller) for the group, local transport and meals; about ₹1,400 to ₹2,000 per person, the lowest per-head cost of all.
A solo pilgrim on a dharamshala-and-shared-auto budget can do the same two days for around ₹1,000 total or about ₹500 a day, the most economical of all, if comfort is less important than cost.
Doing it yourself vs a tour package
There are three broad ways to pay for a Braj trip and the price gap between them is large:
Fully independent: the cheapest, with the most effort. Book your own room, hire autos and a car as you go and eat locally; you pay only the ground rates above, roughly ₹2,000 to ₹4,000 per person for two days, but you spend your own time arranging everything and finding the sites and you face the touts alone.
A local Braj operator: the best value and the easiest. A local operator who bundles the room, the car and a Braj-born guide gives you the low ground rates plus the ease of everything arranged and the sites and stories explained; budget local group operators offer 2-day packages from around ₹2,500 per person including an AC room, an AC car and a Mathura station pickup. This is the sweet spot of value, ease and authenticity and it is how we price our own tours.
Big online platforms and flight-inclusive packages: the most expensive. Ready-made packages on the large booking platforms start around ₹9,500 per person for a 2-night local tour and long-distance, flight-inclusive packages from cities like Bangalore run ₹14,000 to ₹37,000 or more per person. They are convenient but carry a heavy mark-up over the local price and much of it is the flight and the platform's margin, not the Braj experience itself.
For most visitors, a local operator is the best choice: you get the honest ground price, a comfortable room and car and a guide who knows the lanes and the stories, without the mark-up of the online giants. That is exactly what we offer at Experience My India.
How to save money on a Vrindavan trip
Travel in a group and share. The room and the car are the big costs and they split; a family of four or six pays far less per head than a solo traveller. Share where you can.
Come on a weekday, off-season. Hotel rates and demand spike on weekends and in the Kartik and festival seasons; a midweek trip in a quieter month is markedly cheaper. See our crowd guide for the peaks.
Stay in a dharamshala or ashram. For a simple, devotional stay near the temples, a dharamshala at ₹300 to ₹800 a night is a fraction of a hotel and part of the authentic Braj experience.
Eat local and take prasad. The simple vegetarian meals, the local sweets and the temple prasad are cheap and delicious; you need not spend much on food at all.
Use shared e-rickshaws in the towns. Within Vrindavan and Mathura, shared autos and e-rickshaws cost a few rupees a ride; keep the private car only for the outstation legs to Govardhan and Barsana.
Book a local operator, not an online giant. A local Braj operator gives you the ground price with everything arranged; the big online platforms charge many times more for the same ground experience.
Hidden costs and the tout warning
A few things catch visitors out, so plan for them:
Darshan is free, so never pay for it. Entry and darshan at all the standard temples, including Banke Bihari, are completely free. Touts and some unofficial “pandas” may offer paid “special” or “VIP” darshan or demand money inside; politely refuse. Keep your phone and wallet secure in the crowded lanes.
Reaching Mathura is a separate cost. All the budgets here are for your time in Braj; getting to Mathura from your home city is extra. A train from Delhi is cheap, roughly ₹100 to ₹800, while flights from distant cities like Bangalore add a great deal, which is why long-distance packages look so costly.
Weekend and festival surcharges. Hotel rates can double on weekends, long weekends and in the Kartik and festival seasons; if budget matters, avoid these dates. Shoe-minding, donations and small offerings are minor but real extras to keep a little cash for.
How to plan your visit
We help guests do Braj beautifully and affordably, at honest local prices, with a Braj-born guide who knows the lanes, the temple timings and the real costs, so you pay the ground rate and skip the touts and the online mark-up. A shared day tour starts from around ₹1,499 per person, with darshan free and we tailor 2-day and longer trips, with room, car and guide, to your group and budget. Our vrindavan tour package covers Vrindavan in a day, our mathura vrindavan tour the twin cities over two days, the braj 84 kos yatra the whole of Braj and the agra mathura vrindavan tour package adds Agra; visitors from abroad may like our vrindavan for foreign tourists guide.
