Mathura, Vrindavan and Gokul: an overview

The three towns of Mathura, Vrindavan and Gokul hold the whole of Krishna's early life between them and they lie so close that a pilgrim can see all three in a single, unhurried day. Mathura, his birthplace and Vrindavan, the town of his childhood leelas, are only about 12 to 16 km apart and Gokul, the village of his infancy, is a little further, about 26 to 34 km from Vrindavan across the Yamuna. To travel the circuit is to trace the earliest chapters of the Lord's story, from the prison where he was born to the sands where he crawled as a baby to the groves where he played as a boy. The three towns of Krishna's early life

Each of the three towns holds a chapter of Krishna's earliest days and knowing the story deepens the circuit:

• Mathura, the birthplace. Krishna was born in Mathura, in the prison of the tyrant Kansa, the first of the towns and the start of the story; today the Krishna Janmabhoomi marks the sacred spot.

• Gokul, the infancy. On the very night of his birth, the baby Krishna was carried across the Yamuna to Gokul and raised in secret in the home of Nanda and Yashoda; here are the earliest, most tender of his leelas.

• Vrindavan, the childhood. As he grew, Krishna's childhood pastimes, the raas with the gopis and the play among the groves, unfolded in Vrindavan, the town most dense with his temples today.

So the story runs Mathura to Gokul to Vrindavan in time, while the easiest travel loop runs Mathura to Vrindavan to Gokul; either way, the three belong together as the cradle of Krishna's life.

Mathura to Vrindavan: the routes

The first leg, Mathura to Vrindavan, is short and easy, about half an hour. The options, with approximate distance and time:

All three routes are quick, about half an hour; NH 44 is the simplest, while the Bhuteshwar Road route is the shortest in distance at about 12 km. Times are approximate and depend on traffic; please check live maps before you set off.

Vrindavan to Gokul: the routes

The second leg, Vrindavan to Gokul, is longer, as Gokul lies across the Yamuna to the south-east; about 55 minutes. The options:

The full circuit and the best order to visit

The full loop of the three towns is about 40 to 50 km and fits comfortably into a day. Two natural orders:

• The easy travel loop: Mathura to Vrindavan to Gokul. Start at Mathura, go up to Vrindavan, then cross to Gokul, the order of the distances above; simple and efficient by road.

• The chronological order: Mathura to Gokul to Vrindavan. Follow the story in time, from Krishna's birth at Mathura to his infancy at Gokul to his childhood at Vrindavan; a little more back-and-forth but deeply meaningful for pilgrims.

• A comfortable day. Either way, start early, give the morning to Mathura and Vrindavan and the afternoon to Gokul and you will see the three without rush; adding Govardhan or Barsana calls for a second day.

What to see in each town

Each town rewards the stop with its own darshan:

• In Mathura. The Krishna Janmabhoomi at the birthplace, the grand Dwarkadhish temple and the Vishram Ghat on the Yamuna with its evening aarti.

• In Vrindavan. The beloved Banke Bihari, the marble Prem Mandir with its evening light show and the serene ISKCON Krishna-Balaram temple, among many more.

• In Gokul. The Nand Bhavan, the home of Nanda, the soft sacred sands of Raman Reti and the quiet, deeply loved infancy sites, calmer than the temple towns.

Best ways to travel

For this short three-town circuit, the choices are simple:

• By car or taxi (best). The easiest way to link the three in a day, with the freedom to set your own pace and reach the edges of the old towns; a private car and a guide make the circuit smooth.

• By auto and e-rickshaw. Within and between the towns, autos and e-rickshaws serve the shorter hops, cheaper but slower and less direct for the full loop.

• Mind the old-town lanes. In Mathura's and Vrindavan's old quarters, cars are kept out of the narrow lanes, so park at the edge and finish by e-rickshaw and on foot.

Best time to visit and tips

• October to March is the most pleasant season for the circuit, with cool, comfortable weather for the towns and the ghats.

• Start early to give Mathura and Vrindavan the morning and Gokul the afternoon and to beat the heat and the crowds.

• In the old towns, park at the edge and take an e-rickshaw for the temple lanes, which cars cannot enter.

• Plan the darshan around the midday temple closings and keep the evening for the Yamuna aarti at Mathura if you can.

• Agree the fare for any taxi or e-rickshaw beforehand and keep your belongings close in the crowded lanes.
