Mathura to Govardhan distance: the quick answer

The distance from Mathura to Govardhan is about 22 to 25 km by road, depending on the route and takes roughly 37 to 40 minutes to drive, chiefly via the Mathura Govardhan Road. The shortest route is about 21.9 km and the fastest about 37 minutes. So Mathura and Govardhan are close, an easy half-hour to forty-minute drive apart, in the western Braj.

This closeness makes Govardhan, the sacred hill that, by the tradition, Krishna lifted to shelter Braj, a simple and popular day trip from Mathura, very often combined with Barsana, Nandgaon and the other sites of the western Braj. This guide gives the full routes both ways, Mathura to Govardhan and Govardhan to Mathura, how to travel, the time and traffic and what to see when you arrive. For the sacred hill itself, see our govardhan hill guide and for the great circuit our govardhan parikrama guide. Now to the routes and the journey.

From the ground (Gurudutt): A practical note for the journey. The drive from Mathura to Govardhan is short and easy, but the road can be busy, especially near the towns and on festival days and weekends and traffic swells enormously at Govardhan Puja and Guru Purnima, when huge crowds come for the parikrama. So allow extra time then and consider going early. If you plan to walk the Govardhan parikrama of about 21 km, set out early and give the day to it. A car or taxi is the most comfortable way, letting you combine Govardhan with Barsana and the western-Braj sites on one outing, around the temple timings. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour  or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

The routes at a glance

Here are the main routes both ways in one place, from the road data.

22.6 km

about 40 min

Govardhan to Mathura, via Govardhan Rd and Mathura Deeg Marg

24.4 km

about 42 min

In one line: Mathura to Govardhan is about 22 to 25 km and 37 to 40 minutes by road, chiefly via the Mathura Govardhan Road; the return is much the same.

Mathura to Govardhan: the routes

There are a few road options from Mathura to Govardhan, all fairly close in distance and time.

  • Via the Mathura Govardhan Road (fastest, about 23.1 km, about 37 min): the direct and usual route, straight along the main Mathura Govardhan Road; the quickest way and the simplest to follow.

  • Via the Mathura Govardhan Road and Mathura Deeg Marg (shortest, about 21.9 km, about 38 min): a slightly shorter route combining the Govardhan Road with the Mathura Deeg Marg, a minute or so longer in time but the least distance.

  • Via Govardhan Road and Mathura Deeg Marg (about 25.0 km, about 38 min): a somewhat longer alternative on the same roads in a different combination, useful if the direct route is congested.

So for Mathura to Govardhan, the direct Mathura Govardhan Road is the fastest and simplest, at about 23.1 km and 37 minutes, while the Deeg Marg combination is marginally shorter in distance. All are easy, short drives of under 40 minutes. So take the main Mathura Govardhan Road unless traffic suggests an alternative. A local driver will know the best way on the day, around any congestion near the towns.

Govardhan to Mathura: the routes

The return, Govardhan to Mathura, follows much the same roads, taking a little longer.

  • Via the Mathura Govardhan Road (fastest, about 22.6 km, about 40 min): the direct return along the main Mathura Govardhan Road, the quickest and simplest way back.

  • Via Govardhan Road and Mathura Deeg Marg (about 24.4 km, about 42 min): a slightly longer alternative on the Govardhan Road and the Mathura Deeg Marg, useful if the direct route is busy.

So Govardhan to Mathura is about 22.6 to 24.4 km and 40 to 42 minutes, a touch longer than the outward drive but much the same, chiefly via the Mathura Govardhan Road. So the round trip between the two is short and easy in both directions, well under an hour each way. So plan an easy drive back to Mathura or continue to Vrindavan or Barsana as your trip allows, the western Braj being well connected by these roads.

How to travel between Mathura and Govardhan

There are several ways to cover the short distance between Mathura and Govardhan.

  • By car or taxi: the most comfortable and flexible way, about 37 to 40 minutes, letting you go directly, stop as you wish and combine Govardhan with Barsana and the western Braj; hired for the day, it is ideal for a Govardhan trip.

  • By auto or shared vehicle: autos and shared jeeps and tempos run between Mathura and Govardhan, cheaper but slower and busier; a good budget option for the direct trip.

  • By bus: local and state buses run from Mathura towards Govardhan and the Deeg road, economical though less frequent and comfortable; check the current services.

  • By e-rickshaw within the towns: for getting around Govardhan and Jatipura on arrival, once you have reached by car, taxi, auto or bus.

So for most visitors, a car or taxi is the best way to travel from Mathura to Govardhan, comfortable and flexible, especially to combine Govardhan with the western Braj; autos and buses serve the budget traveller. Our how to commute in vrindavan guide covers getting around Braj. A word of honesty on fares: taxis are usually hired per car for the trip or the day, not per person, so a car shared among a few works out well; agree the fare and the itinerary in advance. We arrange comfortable cars with a driver and guide for Govardhan and western-Braj days.

Time, traffic and the best time to travel

The drive from Mathura to Govardhan takes about 37 to 40 minutes in normal conditions, but can take longer in heavy traffic, especially near the towns, on weekends and holidays and above all at the great festivals. Govardhan draws enormous crowds at Govardhan Puja, the day after Diwali, at Guru Purnima and on the Mondays and full-moon days favoured for the parikrama, when the roads and the town are very congested.

So allow extra time on festival and weekend days and consider setting out early in the morning, which is also the best time to begin the Govardhan parikrama and to travel in the cool. The best season overall is the cool months, roughly October to March, pleasant for the drive and the parikrama; the summers are very hot. Our best time to visit vrindavan mathura guide covers the seasons. So travel early and in the cool season for the easiest journey and the best experience of Govardhan, avoiding the worst of the festival crowds unless you come for them.

What to see at Govardhan

Govardhan rewards the short trip from Mathura richly, being one of the holiest places of Braj, the sacred hill that, by the tradition, Krishna lifted on his finger to shelter the people and cattle of Braj from a great storm. The chief things to see and do are these.

  • The Govardhan parikrama, the sacred circuit of the hill, of about 21 km, walked by pilgrims as a supreme devotional act, many barefoot.

  • The Mukharvind at Jatipura and Danghati, the revered lotus mouth of Giriraj, worshipped with milk.

  • Mansi Ganga, the sacred lake at the heart of Govardhan town, with its evening aarti.

  • Radha Kund and Shyam Kund, the holiest kunds and Kusum Sarovar, the beautiful sandstone lake.

So a trip to Govardhan can take in the parikrama, the Mukharvind, Mansi Ganga and the sacred kunds, a rich half day or full day of pilgrimage. Our govardhan parikrama guide covers the hill and its circuit in full. A word of reverence: pilgrims never climb or step upon Giriraj Govardhan, revering the whole hill as a form of the divine, but walk the parikrama around it; honour this custom. Darshan is free throughout. So give Govardhan at least a half day to do it justice, more if you walk the full parikrama.

Making a trip of it: combining with the western Braj

Because Govardhan is so close to Mathura and to the other western-Braj sites, it is best made part of a fuller day.

  • With Barsana and Nandgaon: the towns of Radha and Krishna, about 20 to 25 km from Govardhan, easily added on a western-Braj day.

  • With Mathura's own sights: the Krishna Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish and the Vishram Ghat aarti, before or after Govardhan.

  • With Vrindavan: about 25 to 30 km from Govardhan, for the temples and the Yamuna aarti.

  • On the Braj parikrama: Govardhan is a supreme stop on the great Braj Chaurasi Kos yatra.

So build Govardhan into a western-Braj day with Barsana and Nandgaon or pair it with Mathura's own sights, for a full and rewarding pilgrimage. Our gokul barsana nandgaon day trip guide covers the western-Braj circuit, our places to visit in mathura guide the sights of Mathura and our how to reach vrindavan guide arriving in Braj. We arrange Govardhan and western-Braj days from Mathura or Vrindavan, with the transport, the routing, the timing and a knowledgeable local guide to bring the leelas of Giriraj alive, so you simply take darshan and enjoy. A shared day tour starts from around ₹1,499 per person, with darshan free throughout and our same-day govardhan barsana tour and two-day mathura vrindavan tour cover this side of Braj.
