ISKCON Vrindavan Mangala and Gaura Aarti: an overview
Few experiences in Vrindavan are as moving as the pre-dawn Mangala Aarti at the Sri Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir, when, at 4:30 AM, the temple fills with light and song while the rest of the town still sleeps; and few evenings are as joyful as the Gaura Aarti, the kirtan-filled worship of Lord Chaitanya. This guide gives the exact timings of the Mangala, Tulsi and Gaura aartis, what each one is, the temple and its morning program and how to attend. If you would like your darshan arranged, we can plan it as part of a mathura vrindavan tour with a local guide.
This guide covers the iskcon temple vrindavan aartis in full: the Mangala Aarti and its 4:30 AM start; the Gaura Aarti in the evening; the aarti timings at a glance; the temple and its morning program; how to attend, with entry free; and combining ISKCON with the other temples of Vrindavan.
From the ground (Gurudutt): If you can manage one early morning in Vrindavan, make it the Mangala Aarti at ISKCON. Yes, 4:30 AM is hard, but the atmosphere before dawn, the conch, the kirtan, the freshly dressed deities, is something my guests remember long after the trip. Stay somewhere close by so you are not travelling across town in the dark. Unlike some Vrindavan temples, ISKCON holds this early aarti every single day, so you do not need a festival to see it. In the evening, the Gaura Aarti with the Jaya Jaya Goracander kirtan is pure joy and easier to fit into a day of sightseeing. Entry is free, all are welcome, just dress modestly and keep respectful during the worship.
Mangala Aarti: the 4:30 AM start
The Mangala Aarti is the first and most auspicious service of the day at ISKCON Vrindavan, offered before dawn at 4:30 AM in the main temple. It is preceded by early prayers at the Samadhi Mandir of Srila Prabhupada at about 4:10 AM and it features the singing of the Sri Gurvashtakam, the eight beautiful prayers to the spiritual master, as the deities are greeted at the start of the day.
The Tulsi Aarti follows at 5:00 AM, in worship of the sacred Tulsi plant so dear to Krishna. So the day begins with the Mangala Aarti at 4:30 AM and the Gurvashtakam, then the Tulsi Aarti at 5:00 AM. So it is a beautiful, devotional early morning. We present the seva with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
Gaura Aarti: the evening worship
The Gaura Aarti, also called the Sandhya Aarti, is the main evening worship at ISKCON Vrindavan, held at about 6:30 PM or 7:00 PM depending on the season and the daily schedule. It is dedicated to Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, revered as Gauranga, the golden avatar who spread the chanting of the holy names and to his companion Nityananda.
It is accompanied by the traditional Jaya Jaya Goracander kirtan, so that the evening fills with song and dance in the joy of the holy name. So the Gaura Aarti is the evening worship of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Nityananda, with kirtan, around 6:30 to 7:00 PM. So it is a joyful darshan to end the day. We present the seva with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
The aarti timings at a glance
The main services at ISKCON Vrindavan, with their timings, are given below; the evening time and the later morning services vary with the season and schedule, so confirm on the day.
Service | Time |
Early prayers at Srila Prabhupada's Samadhi | About 4:10 AM |
Mangala Aarti (main temple) | 4:30 AM |
Tulsi Aarti | 5:00 AM |
Gaura (Sandhya) Aarti | About 6:30 PM or 7:00 PM (seasonal) |
After the Tulsi Aarti, the morning program continues with the greeting of the deities, guru-puja and a class from the Srimad Bhagavatam, whose exact times vary. For the full seasonal schedule and the other temples, see our mathura vrindavan temple timings guide and confirm locally. So the key aartis are Mangala at 4:30 AM, Tulsi at 5:00 AM and Gaura in the evening. So plan around them.
The temple and the morning program
ISKCON Vrindavan is the Sri Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir, at Raman Reti in Vrindavan, one of the first temples founded by Srila Prabhupada, the founder-acharya of ISKCON and opened in 1975. Its deities include Sri Sri Krishna Balaram, Sri Sri Radha Shyamsundar and Sri Sri Gaura Nitai and the Samadhi Mandir of Srila Prabhupada, a place of pilgrimage in itself, stands on the premises.
The full morning program flows from the Mangala Aarti and Tulsi Aarti through the greeting of the deities, guru-puja in honour of Srila Prabhupada and a class from the Srimad Bhagavatam, filling the early hours with worship and learning. So it is the Krishna Balaram Mandir of Srila Prabhupada, with a rich daily program. We present it with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
How to attend, tips and entry
Entry is free: admission to ISKCON Vrindavan and darshan of the deities and the aartis are completely free for all visitors.
For the Mangala Aarti: reach the temple a little before 4:30 AM; staying nearby helps greatly for the pre-dawn start, so you are not crossing town in the dark.
For the Gaura Aarti: come in the early evening, around 6:30 to 7:00 PM and be ready for a joyful, kirtan-filled service.
A few honest tips: dress modestly, keep quiet and respectful during the worship, note that photography may be restricted inside and keep your belongings secure. Our how to commute in vrindavan guide covers reaching the temple at Raman Reti. So entry is free and all are welcome, morning and evening. So plan an early night for the Mangala Aarti. So attend the aartis respectfully and enjoy the devotional atmosphere of ISKCON Vrindavan.
Combining with Vrindavan's temples
