The legend of Asheshwar Mahadev

By the tradition, when the child Krishna was being raised in Nandgaon by Nanda and Yashoda, many gods came to have his darshan and among them Lord Shiva came in the form of a yogi. Yashoda, seeing his fearsome ascetic form and fearing the little child would be frightened, would not at first bring Krishna out to him, offering the yogi instead whatever he might want. But Shiva replied that he wished for nothing except the darshan of her son, and, unwilling to leave without it, he went a little way off and sat down with the deep 'aas', the longing, to see the Lord.

Then, by the tradition, the child Krishna, knowing that Shiva had come for his darshan and been turned away, began to cry and would not be soothed by any of Yashoda's efforts, until the gopis suggested calling back the yogi who had just left. When Shiva was brought back and took the child in his arms, and, by some accounts, chanted the name of Radha, the child Krishna was calmed and comforted. From that time, by the tradition, Shiva stayed on at Nandgaon in the form of Asheshwar Mahadev, the lord of the longing to see the Lord. Some accounts also honour gopeshwar mahadev and the wider love of Shiva for Krishna across Braj and tie the sanctity of the kund to the penance of Prajanya Maharaj, the grandfather of Krishna.
