What is Nand Baithak?
Nand Baithak, also called Nand ki Baithak, is a deeply revered sacred site in Nandgaon, the hill town of Nanda Baba in Braj, honoured as the very seat, the baithak, of Nanda Maharaja, the foster father of Lord Krishna. The word baithak means a seat or a sitting place; this is the spot where, by the tradition, Nanda Baba would sit each day, after his morning bath in the adjoining Nand Kund, to rest and to hold council with the elders of the village. Beside it is a temple with the beloved form of Krishna and Balarama seated upon the lap of Nanda Baba. For Nanda Baba's town and its holy places, see our nandgaon up guide and to visit Nandgaon and its sacred sites, a mathura vrindavan tour packages with Experience My India can plan it.
From the ground (Gurudutt): I love bringing guests to Nand Baithak, because here you feel the daily life of Nanda Baba himself, not only the great leelas but the quiet mornings, the bath in the kund, the gathering of the old cowherds to talk over the welfare of their divine child. Standing at this seat, you understand that Nandgaon was a living village with its own council, its own parliament and that Nanda Baba was its loving chief. And the deity here, Krishna and Balarama on their father's lap, is one of the most tender darshans in all of Braj. We tell it as the cherished tradition of Braj. Radhe Radhe.
Why Nanda Baba came to Nandgaon
The story of Nand Baithak begins with the move that founded Nandgaon as the home of Krishna's boyhood:
From Gokul to safety. By the tradition, while the divine child Krishna was growing up, the tyrant Kansa of Mathura sent demon after demon to the cowherd settlements to destroy him; and so, for the safety of the child and the community, Nanda Maharaja moved his entire cowherd clan from Gokul to the hill of Nandishwar, which became Nandgaon.
Settling on the Nandishwar hill. At Nandgaon, Nanda Baba established his household and the life of his community around the Nandishwar hill, with its ponds and groves; and it is here, through the golden years of Krishna's boyhood, that so many of the dearest pastimes of Braj unfolded. For the town Krishna left behind, see our gokul guide.
The daily life of the chief. Here Nanda Baba lived not only as the father of the Lord but as the chief of the cowherds, the Vrajeshwar, the lord of Braj; and the ordering of the community, its decisions and its care for the child, had its heart at the seat we call Nand Baithak.
The seat of Nanda Maharaja and Nand Kund
Nand Baithak is cherished as the precise spot of Nanda Baba's daily seat and it is bound to the sacred water beside it. By the tradition, every morning Nanda Maharaja would take his holy bath in the adjoining Nand Kund; and, refreshed, he would come to sit at this baithak, to relax, to receive his friends and kinsmen and to hold the counsels of the village. So the two, the kund and the seat, belong together, the bathing place and the council place of the lord of Braj and pilgrims honour both. The Nand Kund is one of the sacred ponds of Nandgaon, near the yashoda kund nandgaon and the other holy waters of the town. We present this as the cherished belief and tradition of Braj, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
The parliament of Braj: the council of the elders
Above all, Nand Baithak is revered as the historic parliament of ancient Nandgaon:
The council seat of the chief. Because Nanda Maharaja was the chief of the cowherds, whenever an important matter of the community arose, the elder gopas, the senior cowherd men, would gather here at his seat; and so Nand Baithak is traditionally regarded as the council chamber, the parliament, of old Nandgaon, where the affairs of the village were discussed and its decisions were taken.
Counsel on the welfare of Krishna. By the tradition, it was here that Nanda Baba would sit with his elder and younger brothers, the elderly gopas and the family priests, to take counsel on the well-being of the divine child Krishna and on matters such as his upbringing and, in time, his betrothal; the loving concern of a whole community for its wondrous child had its seat at Nand Baithak.
A living village of Braj. So the site reminds the pilgrim that Nandgaon was a living community with its own order and its own council, lovingly led by Nanda Baba; it is a place to feel the daily life of the town in which the Lord grew up. We present this as the cherished tradition of Braj.
The councils of Nand Baithak and Govardhan
The great councils of Nand Baithak are bound, in the tradition, to the worship of Govardhan Hill, the dearest of the Giriraj pastimes. A cherished local tradition holds that it was in this very council, among the elders of Braj, that the historic decision was taken to turn from the customary sacrifice to Indra, the god of rain and to worship Govardhan Hill instead, the shift that led to the famous lifting of Mount Govardhan by the child Krishna. And the tradition further recounts that after Krishna had lifted the great hill upon his finger to shelter Braj, the elders gathered again at the seat, led by Upanand, the eldest brother of Nanda Baba and concluded in wonder that the child was no ordinary boy but filled with divine power and that he should be loved and revered accordingly. For the hill itself and its worship, see our govardhan hill guide and the giriraj govardhan aarti lyrics. We present these as the cherished beliefs and traditions of Braj, as they are told, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
The temple: Krishna and Balarama on Nanda Baba's lap
The temple built at Nand Baithak holds a unique and tender darshan and the memory of a great saint:
The deity of fatherly love. The altar here shows the beloved form of Lord Krishna and his elder brother Balarama seated affectionately upon the lap of Nanda Baba, a darshan of pure fatherly love, vatsalya, rare and dear among the temples of Braj; it is a form to melt the heart of any devotee.
The penance of Haridas Baba. By local tradition, a saint named Siddh Baba Haridas, Shri Haridas Baba, performed intense penance and bhajan at this spot; and, pleased by his devotion, the Lord granted him darshan in this very form, seated with Balarama upon the lap of Nanda Baba, which is why the deity is worshipped here in this tender paternal form.
The Govardhan Shila and the samadhi. Also at the site, by local account, are a Govardhan Shila, a sacred stone from Govardhan Hill, shaped like a Shivling and revered as such and the samadhi, the memorial shrine, of Shri Haridas Baba; pilgrims take darshan of these too. We present this as the cherished tradition of Braj.
