The distance from Mathura to Barsana is about 42 to 50 km, depending on the route, and the drive takes roughly an hour and a quarter by car or bike. The quickest in the usual traffic is NH 44 joined to the Barsana Road, at about 50 km; the shortest in distance is the route by the Mathura-Govardhan Road, about 42 km, which has the happy advantage of passing near Govardhan. Barsana, the village of Radha Rani, lies in the west of Braj, its hilltop temple reached by a short climb. The return, Barsana to Mathura, is much the same, about 50 km and an hour and a quarter.

Mathura to Barsana distance: an overview

From Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna and the gateway city of Braj, the village of Radha Rani at Barsana lies about 42 to 50 km to the west, an hour and a quarter's drive across the Braj countryside. As Mathura is the transport hub of the region, with the main railway station, many pilgrims begin their Barsana journey here, arriving by train or road and continuing to Radha's town. A happy feature of the drive is that the shortest route runs by the Mathura-Govardhan Road, passing near Govardhan, so Barsana and the sacred hill can be woven into one day; and if you would like the drive, the darshan and the hill climb arranged, a mathura vrindavan tour package with Experience My India takes care of it.

From the ground (Gurudutt): When guests arrive at Mathura Junction and ask me the way to Barsana, I always suggest the Govardhan road, because it is the shortest and it lets you touch Giriraj on the way to Radha Rani's hill. It is an easy hour and a quarter, whether by car or bike, through the fields of Braj. Come early, climb to Shriji before the midday closing and let Ladli Ji bless you. Radhe Radhe. Barsana to Mathura: the return

The return, Barsana to Mathura, is much the same, about 42 to 51 km and an hour and a quarter by car. The main options:

Route

Via Barsana Road and Mathura-Govardhan Road (shortest)

About 42.9 km

By bike the return is again about 42 to 50 km and an hour or so, the Barsana Road and Mathura-Govardhan Road route the shortest at about 42 km. The plain NH 44 return is the longest at about 62 km; the Govardhan road is the shorter, greener way. As always, treat these as guide figures and check live traffic before you leave.

Which route to choose and the Govardhan shortcut

  • For speed, NH 44 and the Barsana Road. The fastest in the usual traffic, an hour and a quarter, though longer in distance at about 50 km; a good, simple road.

  • For the shortest way, the Mathura-Govardhan Road. About 42 km, the shortest route and its great advantage is that it passes near Govardhan, the sacred hill, so you can combine Barsana with a stop at Giriraj in one day.

  • For the heart of Braj, the Radha Kund Road. A little longer, taking you past the sacred Radha Kund, a lovely choice for a pilgrim who wants to touch more of the holy land on the way.

Because the shortest road passes it, govardhan hill pairs naturally with a Barsana visit from Mathura; our govardhan barsana tour is built for exactly this pairing of the hill and Radha Rani's village in a day.

Reaching the Radha Rani Temple

Once you reach Barsana, the darshan asks a short climb:

  • The temple crowns the hill. The Radha Rani Temple, the Shriji or Ladli Ji temple, sits atop Bhanugarh hill above the village, reached by a flight of stone steps, with fine views over Braj opening as you rise.

  • Palanquins for those who need them. For elderly pilgrims or anyone who cannot manage the steps, palanquin bearers are available in the village to carry you up and down for a fee, agreed beforehand.

  • Park at the edge. Vehicles stop at the foot of the hill; take comfortable footwear and carry water, especially in the heat.

See the radha rani temple barsana page for the temple and for the darshan hours our mathura vrindavan temple timings guide, as the temple closes for a few hours at midday. From the temple town of Vrindavan, our vrindavan to barsana distance guide covers the shorter approach.

What to see in Barsana

Barsana is Radha's own town and rewards more than a single temple visit:

  • Kirti Mandir and Maan Mandir. The kirti mandir barsana, dedicated to Radha's mother Kirti and her birth and the maan mandir barsana upon the Barsana hills, both beloved shrines of the town.

  • Nandgaon nearby. Nandgaon, the village of Krishna's foster-father, is about 8 km from Barsana and linked to it in the famous Lathmar Holi; many pilgrims see the two together.

  • Radhashtami and Lathmar Holi. Barsana is famous for its Lathmar Holi and for Radhashtami, Radha Rani's appearance day, when the town overflows with joy; magnificent but very crowded.

See the shri nand mahal nandgaon page for Nandgaon.

Arriving at Mathura and best time to visit

Mathura is the transport hub of Braj, so many pilgrims reach Barsana from here:

  • By train to Mathura Junction. Mathura Junction, the main railway station of the region, connects Mathura widely; from the station you continue to Barsana by road, about 42 to 50 km, as Barsana has no major station of its own.

  • Then by road to Barsana. A taxi, cab or hired vehicle covers the road to Barsana; for the shortest way, take the Mathura-Govardhan Road and combine the hill on the way.

  • Best season. October to March is the most pleasant time for the drive and the hill climb; Radhashtami and the Lathmar Holi are the greatest times to be in Barsana, magnificent but hugely crowded, so plan and book far ahead.

For arriving by train at the region's railheads, our tundla to vrindavan distance guide helps and for getting around, our how to commute in vrindavan guide.

We bring pilgrims from Mathura to Radha Rani's Barsana with a comfortable vehicle, the darshan and the hill climb arranged and a Braj-born guide who loves Barsana, often combining the hill of Govardhan on the way. A shared day tour starts from around ₹1,499 per person, with darshan free. Our mathura vrindavan tour covers Mathura and Vrindavan and the braj 84 kos yatra the whole of Braj.
