Gwalior to Vrindavan Distance: Routes and How to Travel

By Gurudutt, Experience My India·18 September 2026

Gwalior to Vrindavan Distance

Quick Answer

The distance from Gwalior to Vrindavan is about 186 km by the fastest route, and the drive takes roughly four to four and a half hours, most directly on NH 44, the great north-south highway, running north through Agra towards Braj. Being a medium haul, it is easily done in a day, and the road passes close by Agra, so many travellers add the Taj Mahal on the way. As Gwalior is a major railway junction, the train to Mathura Junction is quick and easy too. The return, Vrindavan to Gwalior, is much the same, about 186 km. All times are approximate and depend on traffic.

Gwalior Junction to Mathura Junction, quick and easy

Gwalior to Vrindavan distance: an overview

From Gwalior, the historic fort city of northern Madhya Pradesh, the land of Krishna lies only about 186 km to the north, roughly four to four and a half hours by road on NH 44, the great north-south highway, running through Agra towards Braj. Being a medium haul, it is easily done in a day and the road passes close by Agra, so many travellers add the Taj Mahal on the way, pairing heritage with pilgrimage. As Gwalior is a major railway junction, the train to Mathura Junction is quick and easy too. This guide gives the routes both ways and how to travel them; and if you would like the drive, the darshan and the e-rickshaw arranged, a mathura vrindavan tour with Experience My India can plan your trip.

From the ground (Gurudutt): For my guests from Gwalior, Braj is close and easy, only about four hours up NH 44 and Agra with the Taj is right on the way, so many pair the wonder of the world with Krishna's land. Come by car for the freedom or take one of your fine trains to Mathura Junction, which is quick. Do the temples fresh and let the Yamuna bless you. From the fort city to the flute of Krishna, it is a lovely journey. Radhe Radhe.

Gwalior to Vrindavan: the routes

There are three main ways to drive from Gwalior to Vrindavan, largely on NH 44. The options, with approximate distance and time:

Route

Distance

Time (approx)

Via NH 44 (fastest)

About 186 km

About 4 hr 20 min

Via NH 44 and the Yamuna Expressway

About 200 km

About 4 hr 25 min

Via the Gwalior Road and NH 44

About 200 km

About 4 hr 51 min

The direct NH 44 route is the fastest and shortest at about 186 km and about four and a half hours, running through Agra; the routes joining the Yamuna Expressway near the Braj end or the Gwalior Road, are a little longer. NH 44 is the natural choice. Times are approximate and depend on traffic; please check live maps before you set off.

Vrindavan to Gwalior: the return

The return, Vrindavan to Gwalior, is much the same. The options:

Route

Distance

Time (approx)

Via NH 44 (fastest)

About 186 km

About 4 hr 21 min

Via the Yamuna Expressway and NH 44

About 200 km

About 4 hr 19 min

Via NH 44 and the Gwalior Road

About 201 km

About 5 hr 3 min

The direct NH 44 route is again the fastest for the return, at about 186 km; the Yamuna Expressway route is a smooth alternative of much the same time. Treat these as guide figures and check live traffic before you leave.

The route via NH 44 and Agra

The road from Gwalior to Braj runs up NH 44 through Agra, which shapes the journey:

  • The great north-south highway. NH 44 is the longest national highway in India; from Gwalior it runs north through Agra to Braj, so the journey is largely a straight run up this great road, smooth and fast.

  • Agra on the way. Agra, with the Taj Mahal, lies on the route, about 120 km from Gwalior, so many travellers add the wonder of the world on the way to or from Braj; near the Braj end, the Yamuna Expressway offers a smooth alternative.

  • A good, easy drive. The route is a good main highway with tolls, so keep your FASTag ready; being only about four and a half hours, it is easily done in a day or paired with an Agra visit over two.

Where the road reaches the Braj end near Agra, our agra to vrindavan distance guide covers the final leg towards Mathura and Vrindavan.

Best ways to travel: road and rail

For this medium haul, Gwalior gives you good choices:

  • By car (flexible). About four to four and a half hours on NH 44 through Agra, doable in a day, with the freedom to stop at Agra and the Taj on the way; the most flexible choice. Fares vary, so ask us for a live quote.

  • By train (quick and easy). Gwalior is a major railway junction on the main lines, so good, fast trains connect it to Mathura Junction, the railway station for Vrindavan, about 14 km away, in a short ride of a few hours; restful and easy and a favourite for Gwalior travellers. Check current trains on IRCTC.

  • By bus. Buses run from Gwalior towards Agra and Mathura; the budget option, though slower and less direct than a car or the train.

For arriving by train, our tundla to vrindavan distance guide covers the region's railheads and for the cab option, our delhi to mathura vrindavan distance taxi cost guide covers fares.

Combining with Agra and the Taj Mahal

The happiest feature of the Gwalior to Braj journey is that Agra lies right on the way:

  • The Taj on the way. Agra, with the Taj Mahal, the Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, is only about 120 km from Gwalior on NH 44, so a trip to Braj naturally passes it; many travellers see the wonder of the world on the way to or from Krishna's land.

  • Gwalior, Agra and Braj. Together, the fort city of Gwalior, the Taj at Agra and the temples of Braj make a rich short circuit of heritage and devotion, easily done over two or three days.

  • Note on the Taj. The Taj is closed on Fridays and its ticket is separate and paid, so plan around that; carry ID and allow time for the security and queues.

Our agra mathura vrindavan tour package is built for exactly this pairing of Agra and Braj.

What to see in Braj, best time and tips

When you reach Braj, the great sights await:

  • In Mathura and Vrindavan. See the Krishna Janmabhoomi at the birthplace, the Dwarkadhish temple and the Yamuna ghats in Mathura; and the beloved Banke Bihari, the marble Prem Mandir with its evening light show and the serene ISKCON temple in Vrindavan.

  • Best time. October to March is the most pleasant season for the drive and the darshan, with cool, comfortable weather; start early for a day trip so you reach the temples before the midday closing.

  • Tips. In the old towns, cars are kept out of the lanes, so park at the edge and take an e-rickshaw for the temples; see Vrindavan and Mathura together, only about 14 km apart, for a full day of Braj.

See the krishna janmabhoomi, dwarkadhish temple and braj yamuna ghats and leela sites in Mathura and the banke bihari temple, prem mandir vrindavan and iskcon temple vrindavan in Vrindavan.

We welcome pilgrims from Gwalior to Mathura and Vrindavan, often with Agra and the Taj on the way, with a comfortable vehicle, the temple darshan and the e-rickshaw arranged and a Braj-born guide and we can meet you at Mathura Junction if you come by train. A shared day tour starts from around ₹1,499 per person, with darshan free. Our mathura vrindavan tour covers the twin cities, our vrindavan tour package Vrindavan in a day and the braj 84 kos yatra the whole of Braj; our mathura vrindavan tour itinerary, how to commute in vrindavan and mathura vrindavan temple timings guides help you plan. "I booked the Same Day Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package with Experience My India and had a very smooth pilgrimage from Gwalior. The journey was comfortable, and everything was planned properly so we could make the most of our single day. Gurudutt ji was very helpful throughout and gave us clear guidance about the temples and local travel. We visited Krishna Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish Temple, Banke Bihari Temple and Prem Mandir. The e-rickshaw arrangement in the temple areas was especially convenient. I liked that the trip focused on darshan rather than unnecessary sightseeing. Experience My India handled the day with genuine care, and we returned home tired but very happy and spiritually refreshed."

"Our 2 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package with Experience My India turned out to be a lovely family pilgrimage. Since we were travelling from Shivpuri, the journey felt quite convenient, and having the complete local arrangements made things much easier. Gurudutt ji personally guided us and helped us understand the best way to cover Mathura and Vrindavan. We visited Krishna Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish Temple, Vishram Ghat, Banke Bihari Temple, ISKCON and Prem Mandir. There was enough time for darshan and to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of Braj. The vehicle and local e-rickshaw arrangements were well managed. Experience My India made the entire trip comfortable and organised without making it feel rushed."

"I travelled with my family on the 3 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package by Experience My India, and the three-day plan gave us enough time to experience Braj properly. Gurudutt ji was very supportive from the beginning and remained available whenever we needed help. We covered Krishna Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish Temple and the Yamuna ghats in Mathura, followed by Banke Bihari Temple, Prem Mandir and ISKCON in Vrindavan. We also appreciated having a little extra time between visits instead of rushing from one temple to another. The local transport arrangements were comfortable, especially around the narrow temple lanes. Experience My India managed the trip sincerely and professionally. It was a peaceful family journey that we will remember for years."
