What is Vrishabhanu Kund?
Vrishabhanu Kund, also known as Bhanokhar or the Jal Mahal, is one of the most prominent and sacred kunds, holy stepped ponds, in Barsana, the hill town of Radha Rani in Braj. By the tradition and as recorded in the Braj Bhakti Vilas, it was established by King Vrishabhanu, the chieftain of Barsana and the beloved father of Shrimati Radha Rani, as his own bathing pool beside his palace; it is cherished too as a playground of the water pastimes of Radha and Krishna. It lies about 1 km east of the famous hilltop radha rani temple barsana. To visit Barsana and the holy places of Radha's town, a mathura vrindavan tour packages with Experience My India can plan it.
From the ground (Gurudutt): Most pilgrims climb straight to the Ladli Ji temple on the hill and never come down to Vrishabhanu Kund, which is a pity, because here you stand at the home of Radha Rani's own father, at the very water where the king of Barsana bathed each morning. The old Jal Mahal reflected in the pond is one of the most beautiful and peaceful sights in Barsana, away from the crowds. I love to bring guests here and tell them whose water this is. We tell it as the cherished tradition of Braj. Radhe Radhe.
King Vrishabhanu and the founding of Barsana
The story of the kund is the story of Radha's own family and their coming to Barsana:
The father of Radha Rani. King Vrishabhanu, Maharaja Vrishabhanu, was the chieftain of the cowherds and the beloved father of Shrimati Radha Rani, the dearest of all to Lord Krishna; his queen was Kirti, Radha's mother. His name is honoured across Braj as the father of Radha and the kund carries his name.
From Rawal to Barsana. By the tradition, Radha was born at Rawal, near Gokul on the Yamuna; and, to keep his family safe in the troubled times of old, when the tyrant Kansa of Mathura menaced the region, King Vrishabhanu shifted his residence and his people to the hills of Barsana, the Bhanugarh hills, where Radha grew up. So Barsana became the town of Radha.
The palace and the pond. At Barsana, King Vrishabhanu established his palace upon the hill, and, beside it, this stepped pond, Vrishabhanu Kund, as the bathing water of the royal household; the palace and the pond together are the heart of the king's own quarter of Barsana, honoured to this day. We present this as the cherished tradition of Braj.
The king's daily bath and Brajeshwar Mahadev
Vrishabhanu Kund is cherished above all as the personal bathing pool of Maharaja Vrishabhanu. By the tradition and as recorded in the Braj Bhakti Vilas, the king would take his holy bath here each day; and, purified, he would then go to offer his worship to Brajeshwar Mahadev, the form of Lord Shiva revered as the guardian lord of Braj. So the kund was bound to the daily devotion of Radha's father, the bath before the worship and pilgrims honour it as the water that began the king's each day in the service of the Lord. We present this as the cherished belief and tradition of Braj, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
The water pastimes of Radha and Krishna
Vrishabhanu Kund is held dear, too, as a place of the pastimes, the leelas, of Shri Radha and Shri Krishna. By the tradition, the kund was a playground of Radha Rani and her sakhis, her girl companions, in the days of her girlhood at Barsana; and it is cherished as a place where the divine couple, Radha and Krishna, enjoyed their celestial water sports, the jala-keli, together. This is understood by devotees as the pure, transcendent play of the divine couple, the eternal, selfless love of Radha and Krishna, never a worldly matter, a sweetness beyond this world that the devotee remembers with reverence. For the aartis of Radha, see the radha rani aarti lyrics. We present this as the cherished tradition of Braj, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
The Jal Mahal, the water palace and its heritage
The kund takes its famous name, Jal Mahal, the water palace, from a striking feature of its architecture and from its honoured antiquity:
The water palace. The structure beside the kund is designed so that part of the old palace, by the local account some of its lower storeys, stands within the water of the pond, so that the building seems to rise from the kund itself; it is this that earns it the beautiful title Jal Mahal, the water palace, a rare and lovely sight among the kunds of Braj.
An honoured antiquity. The site is of great age and has been cared for and restored over the centuries; by the record an old inscription of Vikram Samvat 1666, of the early seventeenth century, attests to its antiquity and its restoration and Vrishabhanu Kund with its Jal Mahal is today a protected monument of the Archaeological Survey of India.
A heritage to honour. So pilgrims come to Vrishabhanu Kund for its sanctity and for its beauty alike, the holy water of Radha's father and the graceful old water palace reflected in it; treat this heritage site with care and keep its peace. We present this as the cherished tradition of Braj.
Spiritual significance and the merit of a holy bath
Vrishabhanu Kund is held highly sacred by Vaishnava devotees, dear within the Gaudiya and the Nimbarka traditions alike. By the tradition and as the Braj Bhakti Vilas is cherished to declare, one who faithfully bathes in or reverently honours, the holy waters of Vrishabhanu Kund is cleansed of worldly sins and blessed with pure devotion, bhakti, to Radha and Krishna; for the water is held to carry the sanctity of the home of Radha's own father. Devotees therefore take a reverent dip or sprinkle the holy water upon the head and offer their prayers here, remembering King Vrishabhanu and the divine couple. We present this as the cherished belief and tradition of Braj, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
What to see today and how to reach
Vrishabhanu Kund today is a tranquil, holy spot on the eastern side of Barsana, below the temple hill:
The kund and the Jal Mahal. See the stepped pond itself, with its ghats and the graceful old Jal Mahal, the water palace, rising from the water; take a quiet, reverent dip or sprinkle the holy water and offer your prayers, remembering King Vrishabhanu and the pastimes of Radha and Krishna. It is a peaceful, deeply devotional place, away from the crowds of the hilltop.
Where it is. Vrishabhanu Kund, Bhanokhar, is on the eastern side of Barsana, about 1 km east of the hilltop Shri Radha Rani temple. Barsana lies in the north-western part of Braj, about 9 km from Nandgaon, the town of Nanda Baba and roughly 50 km from Mathura city.
How to reach and visiting. Most pilgrims come by car, auto-rickshaw or taxi from Mathura or Vrindavan, usually as part of a Barsana and Nandgaon day; the kund is a little below and east of the temple hill, so a Braj guide who knows Barsana helps you find it. Come in the cool of the morning or evening, honour the water quietly and keep the peace of this holy heritage place.
