Pairing Rishikesh yoga and the Ganga with the temples of Braj

Rishikesh and Vrindavan: an overview

Rishikesh, the yoga capital on the Ganga at the foot of the Himalayas and Vrindavan, the town of Krishna on the Yamuna, draw seekers of very different kinds, yet many a traveller joins the two, carrying the calm of the Ganga aarti into the bhakti of Braj. The distance between them is about 361 to 394 km by road, a drive of roughly 6 hours 45 minutes to 7 hours, running down from the foothills and skirting the Delhi region by expressway to the plains of Braj. This guide gives every route in both directions with its distance and time, all the ways to travel, what to expect on the road and what awaits you in Vrindavan; and if you would like it all arranged, a mathura vrindavan tour package with Experience My India can meet you and guide your Braj days.

From the ground (Gurudutt): I meet many guests in Braj who have just come from Rishikesh, still glowing from the yoga and the river. My advice for the drive is the same as I give everyone from the hills: start early, take one of the expressway routes rather than the slow all-highway one and plan a rest and meal near the Delhi ring. You will trade the mountains for the plains and the Ganga for the Yamuna and arrive in time to give the evening to Banke Bihari and the Prem Mandir lights. Radhe Radhe. Rishikesh to Vrindavan distance: the routes

There are three main road routes from Rishikesh to Vrindavan; here they are side by side:

Route

Distance

Driving time

Via

Fastest

394 km

About 6 hr 43 min

NH 344G and Yamuna Expressway

Shortest

361 km

About 6 hr 48 min

Eastern Peripheral Expressway

Alternative

389 km

About 8 hr 22 min

NH 344G

In short: the two expressway routes, via the Yamuna Expressway (394 km, the fastest) and via the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (361 km, the shortest), both take just under 7 hours, far quicker than the all-highway NH 344G route at about 8 hours 22 minutes.

Vrindavan to Rishikesh distance: the routes

Going back, the routes and times are much the same; the main options are these:

Route

Distance

Driving time

Via

Fastest

382 km

About 6 hr 29 min

Yamuna Expressway

Alternative

404 km

About 6 hr 34 min

Yamuna Expressway and NH 344G

Slower

391 km

About 8 hr 5 min

NH 344G

In short: from Vrindavan the quickest way back to Rishikesh is the 382 km route via the Yamuna Expressway, about 6 hours 29 minutes; a route via the Yamuna Expressway and NH 344G is 404 km and about 6 hours 34 minutes, while the all-highway NH 344G route is slower at about 8 hours 5 minutes. As in the other direction, the expressway is the sensible choice.

Which route should you choose?

  • For the quickest drive: the Yamuna Expressway route. In both directions the Yamuna Expressway route is the fastest, about 6 hours 43 minutes to Vrindavan and about 6 hours 29 minutes back to Rishikesh, on smooth, fast expressway for much of the way; it is the usual choice.

  • For the shortest distance to Vrindavan: the Eastern Peripheral Expressway. Coming to Vrindavan, the 361 km route via the Eastern Peripheral Expressway is the shortest, about 6 hours 48 minutes and helps you skirt the busiest parts of the Delhi region.

  • Best avoided: the all-highway route. The route via NH 344G alone, without the expressways, is slower in both directions, about 8 hours; choose it only if the expressways are closed or you have a particular reason.

Check live traffic on the day, since conditions near the Delhi region can decide which route is quickest; a driver who knows the roads will pick the best one.

How to travel between Rishikesh and Vrindavan

There are several ways to make the journey; the options at a glance:

  • By car or taxi (best). The most comfortable and flexible way, about 7 hours by one of the expressway routes, door to door, with rest stops of your choosing; ideal for families, elders and travellers with luggage and easily arranged as part of a Braj tour.

  • By train. There is no direct rail hop; you travel by train from the Haridwar or Rishikesh area to Mathura Junction, some services via Delhi and then cover the roughly 15 km from Mathura to Vrindavan by road. Check the current timetable and book ahead.

  • By bus. Buses run from Rishikesh and Haridwar towards Delhi and on to Mathura, from where you take a local ride to Vrindavan; it is the budget option, though slower and with changes.

  • By air. There is no direct flight for so short a hop; the nearest airport to Rishikesh is Dehradun (Jolly Grant) and to Vrindavan is Delhi, so road remains the practical way between the two.

If you are coming by rail, our tundla to vrindavan distance guide covers the nearby railheads and the last leg into Vrindavan and our how to commute in vrindavan guide covers getting around once you arrive.

The drive: what to expect

  • A start in the Ganga foothills at Rishikesh, dropping past Haridwar to the plains.

  • A stretch skirting the Delhi region, by the Eastern Peripheral or the Yamuna Expressway.

  • Fast, smooth expressway driving for much of the middle of the journey, with tolls.

  • Good food and fuel stops along the expressways; plan a rest and meal near the Delhi ring.

  • Arrival past Mathura into Vrindavan, about 15 km apart, in the heart of Braj.

Start early to reach Vrindavan by the afternoon, rest and keep the evening for darshan; the expressway routes make an easy day of it.

Yoga and the Ganga to the land of Krishna: pairing Rishikesh and Braj

For many travellers the Rishikesh to Vrindavan journey joins two very different but deeply loved experiences and it pairs beautifully:

  • Rishikesh for yoga and meditation, the Ganga aarti, the Ram Jhula and Laxman Jhula and the gateway to the Himalayas and the Char Dham

  • Then Braj: Vrindavan and Mathura for the birthplace and childhood of Krishna

  • and for those with more days, Agra and the Taj Mahal or Ayodhya and Varanasi beyond

For a longer pilgrimage circuit, our mathura vrindavan ayodhya varanasi tour links the great temple cities, while the braj 84 kos yatra covers the whole of Braj. We hold all these holy places with reverence.

What to see when you arrive in Vrindavan

Vrindavan rewards even a single evening; the essentials to see when you arrive:

The beloved banke bihari temple, the magnificent prem mandir vrindavan, the iskcon temple vrindavan and the braj yamuna ghats and leela sites at Keshi Ghat are the heart of a first visit, with the birthplace at the shri krishna janmabhoomi temple in Mathura close by. Remember that the main temples close for a few hours at midday, so plan your darshan for the morning or evening; our mathura vrindavan temple timings guide keeps the current hours.

Best time, tips and how to plan

  • Start early to reach Vrindavan by the afternoon and keep the evening for darshan.

  • Take one of the expressway routes; avoid the slower all-highway NH 344G route if you can.

  • Plan a rest and meal stop near the Delhi ring, roughly the middle of the drive.

  • Carry water and some cash for tolls; the expressways are tolled.

  • October to March is the pleasantest season for both the drive and the temple towns.

  • In the Char Dham and yoga-festival seasons, roads around Rishikesh can be busy; allow extra time.

Rishikesh · 24 August 2026

"We booked the Same Day Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package after spending a few days in Rishikesh. The road journey was around seven hours, so the early start was important. The expressway route made the drive comfortable, and after reaching Vrindavan we focused on the main temples. We visited Banke Bihari Temple, ISKCON and Prem Mandir, and later enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere at Keshi Ghat. We also included Mathura, where we visited Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi. The advice to keep the evening for darshan worked perfectly for us."

"Our 2 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package was a much more comfortable option after travelling from Rishikesh. Instead of trying to see everything immediately, we had enough time to explore Banke Bihari, Prem Mandir, ISKCON and Keshi Ghat properly. We also visited Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura, which is only about 15 km from Vrindavan. We liked having the flexibility to plan around the temple closures at midday and return for evening darshan. The two-day plan gave us enough time to enjoy Braj without constantly watching the clock."

"We chose the 3 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package after our Rishikesh trip because we wanted to slow down and spend proper time in Braj. The first visits included Banke Bihari Temple, ISKCON, Prem Mandir and Keshi Ghat, followed by Mathura and Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi. We especially enjoyed having separate time for morning and evening darshan instead of trying to cover every temple in one afternoon. The journey from Rishikesh is around seven hours by the faster expressway routes, so having three days in Braj made much more sense for us than combining a long drive with rushed sightseeing."
