It is one of the first questions a Braj visitor asks and the honest answer is that it depends on what you want from the trip. If your journey is above all a pilgrimage, a time to lose yourself in temples and kirtan, then Vrindavan, the town of Krishna's leela, is the natural home; most pilgrims stay here and the atmosphere is unmatched. If instead you want the ease of the main railway station, a more city-like comfort and a central base from which to reach the whole of Braj and Agra, then Mathura serves better. Staying in Vrindavan

Vrindavan is the town of Krishna's childhood and the beating heart of Braj devotion and for most visitors it is the place to stay. What it offers:

The temples on your doorstep. You wake among the temples: the banke bihari temple, prem mandir vrindavan, the iskcon temple vrindavan, Nidhivan and Seva Kunj are all here and darshan is a walk or a short e-rickshaw ride away.

• A devotional atmosphere. The whole town lives Krishna, from the morning bells to the evening kirtan; for a pilgrimage, nothing matches the immersion of staying here.

Staying in Mathura

Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna, is the elder city of Braj and while fewer visitors base themselves here, it has real advantages for the right traveller:

The birthplace and its temples. Mathura holds the sacred krishna janmabhoomi at Krishna's birthplace, the grand dwarkadhish temple and the braj yamuna ghats and leela sites where the evening Yamuna aarti is one of Braj's loveliest sights.

• The best connectivity. Mathura Junction, the main railway station for the whole region, is in the city and Mathura sits on the highway, so it is the easiest base to reach by train and the most central for onward travel.

• A central base for day trips. From Mathura, Vrindavan, Govardhan, Gokul, Barsana and even Agra are all within easy reach, which makes it a practical hub if you plan to explore widely rather than settle into one town.

• A more city-like comfort. Mathura offers more of a city feel, with business and mid-range hotels and more everyday amenities, though it has fewer of the premium, pilgrim-focused stays that Vrindavan has grown.

A third option: near the highway

There is a middle path worth knowing. A cluster of newer hotels has grown up along the Chhatikara road and the highway between Mathura and Vrindavan, near the great ISKCON temple, which sits roughly between the two towns. Staying here gives easy vehicle access to both, a little more calm and space than the old-town lanes and a quick run to the Yamuna Expressway for Agra or Delhi; a good choice for those who want to split their time evenly between the two towns or who are travelling by car.

• For a temple-focused pilgrimage. Choose Vrindavan, for the immersion, the darshan on your doorstep and the devotional mood; this suits most pilgrims.

• For connectivity and day trips. Choose Mathura, for the railway station, the highway and the central position for exploring all of Braj and Agra.

• For a short, one or two-night trip. Choose Vrindavan if your focus is the temples or Mathura if you are arriving late by train and moving on quickly.

• For a family wanting space or a car-based trip. Consider the highway and Chhatikara area, near ISKCON, for easy access to both towns.
