Vrindavan to Neem Karoli Baba Distance: Routes to Kainchi Dham

By Gurudutt, Experience My India·10 September 2026

Vrindavan to Neem Karoli Baba Distance

Quick Answer

The distance from Vrindavan to Neem Karoli Baba's famous ashram at Kainchi Dham, near Nainital in Uttarakhand, is about 466 to 552 km, and the drive takes roughly 11 to 12 hours. The fastest route is NH 9, at about 552 km, which despite being longer is quicker on the better road; the shorter routes by NH 530B are about 466 km but slower. This is a long haul, so it is best planned as an overnight or a two-day journey. Note that Neem Karoli Baba took his mahasamadhi in Vrindavan itself, so there is also a Neem Karoli Baba ashram, his Samadhi Mandir, here in Vrindavan; the great mountain ashram this distance refers to is the Kainchi Dham near Nainital.

Vrindavan to Neem Karoli Baba distance: an overview

From Vrindavan, the famous ashram of Neem Karoli Baba at Kainchi Dham, in the Kumaon hills near Nainital, lies about 466 to 552 km to the north, roughly 11 to 12 hours by road. It is a much-loved journey for devotees who wish to join the darshan of Krishna in Braj with a pilgrimage to the great saint's mountain ashram. Being a long haul, it is best made as an overnight or a two-day trip. There is a beautiful closeness here too, for Neem Karoli Baba chose to leave his body in Vrindavan itself, so his Samadhi Mandir stands in Krishna's town; the drive to Kainchi is to his mountain home in the hills. To plan a comfortable trip from Braj, a mathura vrindavan tour package with Experience My India can help.

From the ground (Gurudutt): Many devotees who come to Vrindavan love Neem Karoli Baba and I always tell them two things. First, Baba's own Samadhi Mandir is right here in Vrindavan, on the Parikrama Marg, so do take his darshan here. And second, if you wish to visit his famous Kainchi Dham in the hills near Nainital, it is a long day's drive, about eleven hours, so go overnight and rest in Nainital. Baba's blessings are the same in both places. Jai Shri Ram, Radhe Radhe. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour Package  or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

About Neem Karoli Baba and Kainchi Dham

Neem Karoli Baba, lovingly called Maharaj-ji, is one of the most revered saints of modern India and Kainchi Dham his most famous ashram:

  • A great devotee of Hanuman. Neem Karoli Baba, a saint of the twentieth century, was a great devotee of Lord Hanuman and his ashrams are known for their Hanuman temples and their spirit of love, service and simplicity; countless devotees, in India and around the world, revere him.

  • The Kainchi Dham ashram. Kainchi Dham, established in the 1960s, sits in the forested Kumaon hills beside the Koshi river, about 38 km from Nainital; its name comes from the scissor-like turns of the road beside it. With its Hanuman temple, it is a place of deep peace, dear to devotees from across the world.

  • A worldwide devotion. The ashram is beloved by many, including well-known figures from the West who came to Maharaj-ji and it draws pilgrims and seekers to the hills; a great bhandara is held there each year on the fifteenth of June.

The Vrindavan connection: Baba's Samadhi Mandir

There is a special reason this journey begins in Vrindavan and it is worth knowing:

  • Baba's mahasamadhi in Vrindavan. Neem Karoli Baba chose to leave his body in Vrindavan, Krishna's own holy town, in September 1973; so Vrindavan holds a deep place in his story and his devotees' hearts.

  • The Samadhi Mandir in Vrindavan. His Vrindavan ashram, on the Parikrama Marg a short way from the Mathura Road, holds his Samadhi Mandir, where his body rests, with a Ram-Sita-Lakshman-Hanuman temple; a great mahasamadhi bhandara is kept there in September.

  • Both places are dear. So a devotee in Vrindavan can take Baba's darshan here at his Samadhi Mandir and also make the pilgrimage to his mountain ashram at Kainchi; the two are bound together in his life and grace.

Best ways to travel

For the long journey from Vrindavan to Kainchi Dham, the choices are:

  • By car (most flexible). About 11 to 12 hours by road, NH 9 the fastest, with the freedom to break the journey; best as an overnight, resting a night on the way or in Nainital. Fares vary, so ask us for a live quote.

  • By air, then road. The nearest airport to Kainchi is Pantnagar, about 70 km away; you would fly to Delhi or Pantnagar and continue by road, which can be faster overall for the long distance. Check current flights.

  • By train, then road. The nearest railway station to Kainchi is Kathgodam, about 37 km away, well connected to Delhi; from Vrindavan you would travel by rail towards Kathgodam or Haldwani and continue by road to the ashram. Check current trains on IRCTC.

For the cab option and fares at the Braj end, see our delhi to mathura vrindavan distance taxi cost guide and our how to commute in vrindavan guide for getting around Vrindavan.

Best time to visit and tips

  • Kainchi Dham is in the hills, so the pleasant months of roughly March to June and September to November are best; it can be very cold and is closed for part of the winter.

  • The ashram keeps strict rules and does not generally offer stays to the public without prior arrangement, so most visitors stay in Nainital or nearby Bhowali and visit by day; check the current arrangements before you go.

  • Tuesdays are especially auspicious at Kainchi, being the day of Hanuman and a great bhandara is held on the fifteenth of June; both bring large crowds.

  • It is a long haul of about eleven to twelve hours, so plan an overnight rather than a single day and take breaks on the drive.

  • In Vrindavan, do not miss Baba's own Samadhi Mandir on the Parikrama Marg and take care with fares and any schemes, arranging a trusted cab and stay.

We arrange comfortable cabs and trips from Vrindavan and can help you plan a journey to Kainchi Dham along with the darshan of Krishna and of Baba's Samadhi Mandir in Braj, with a comfortable vehicle and a guide who knows the roads. A shared day tour in Braj starts from around ₹1,499 per person, with darshan free at the Braj temples. Our vrindavan tour package covers Vrindavan in a day, our mathura vrindavan tour the twin cities and the braj 84 kos yatra the whole of Braj; in Vrindavan the banke bihari temple, prem mandir vrindavan, iskcon temple vrindavan and seva kunj vrindavan await and our mathura vrindavan tour itinerary helps plan the Braj days.
