To travel between them is to move from the earliest, most tender of Krishna's leelas, in the quiet of Gokul, to one of the most magnificent of the modern temples, luminous at night with its light and fountain, a journey from the ancient to the new heart of Braj. Raman Reti to Prem Mandir: the routes

There are a few ways to make the drive from Gokul's Raman Reti up to Prem Mandir in Vrindavan. The options, with approximate distance and time:

The NH 44 route is the shortest in distance at about 29 km and the NH 530B route is a touch quicker in time at about 53 minutes; both are good, easy drives of under an hour. Times are approximate and depend on traffic; please check live maps before you set off.

Prem Mandir to Raman Reti: the return

The return, Prem Mandir to Raman Reti, is much the same, about 31 to 32 km and just under an hour. The options:

What is Raman Reti

Raman Reti, meaning the sands of play, is a sacred stretch of soft, fine sand in the Gokul and Mahavan region, across the Yamuna from Mathura, where the infant Krishna is said to have crawled and played in his earliest childhood. It is one of the most tender and beloved of the Braj sites:

• The holy sands. Pilgrims roll in the soft sands and carry a little home, for this is the very earth on which Krishna played as a baby; the atmosphere is quiet, old and deeply devotional.

• The ashram and the deer. The Raman Reti ashram, a peaceful retreat of sadhus, cares for a herd of gentle deer that wander the sands, adding to the calm, timeless feeling of the place.

• The infancy leelas. Being in Gokul, Raman Reti belongs to the very earliest of Krishna's leelas, his infancy in the home of Nanda and Yashoda, quieter and less crowded than the great temple towns.

What is Prem Mandir

At the other end of the drive stands prem mandir vrindavan, the Temple of Love, one of the great modern marvels of Vrindavan. A two-storey temple of white Italian marble set across a vast garden campus, built by Jagadguru Kripalu Ji Maharaj, it is carved with scenes from the lives of Radha-Krishna and Sita-Ram. It is loveliest after dark, when the marble is bathed in changing colours and a musical fountain plays, drawing crowds every evening; the gardens, the leela scenes and the sheer scale make it a highlight of any Vrindavan visit and a fitting, magnificent close to a day that began in the humble sands of Gokul.

Best ways to travel

For this short within-Braj hop, the choices are simple:

• By car or taxi (best). The easiest way, under an hour door to door, with the freedom to combine Raman Reti and Prem Mandir with the other sites of Gokul, Mathura and Vrindavan on the way.

• By auto or shared transport. Autos and shared vehicles run along the Braj roads and can be pieced together for the journey, cheaper but slower and less direct than a car.

• Within the towns, e-rickshaws. At each end, an e-rickshaw covers the local lanes; Prem Mandir has its own parking, while at Raman Reti you walk the sands on foot.

• October to March is the most pleasant season for the drive and for both sites, with cool, comfortable weather.

• See Raman Reti and Gokul in the calmer morning, then reach Prem Mandir for the evening, when its light and fountain show is at its most beautiful.

• At Raman Reti, walk the sands barefoot in the devotional spirit of the place and keep your belongings close.

• Prem Mandir has its own parking and is easy to reach by car; allow time in the evening for the crowds that gather for the light show.

• Agree the fare for any taxi, auto or e-rickshaw beforehand, as first-time visitors are often quoted high.
