Places to visit near the Taj Mahal: an overview

The Taj Mahal is the reason most people come to Agra, but it would be a shame to see it and leave, because some of India's greatest monuments and most rewarding day trips lie all around it. This guide lists the best places to visit near the Taj Mahal sorted by distance, from the spots you can walk to, through the great sights a short drive away, to the day trips within an hour or two, each with its timings, location, best time and how to reach it.

Organising them by distance makes planning easy: you can fill the hours around your Taj visit with what is closest, then choose day trips by how far you wish to travel. For the full, in-depth guide to the city's monuments with all their detail, see our companion places to visit in agra guide; this page is your map to what lies near the Taj and how far.

From the ground (Gurudutt): The one thing to plan around: the Taj Mahal is closed every Friday. On a Friday, see the Taj from Mehtab Bagh across the river and spend the day at Agra Fort, the Baby Taj and the other nearby sights, all of which stay open. And whatever day you go, visit the Taj itself at sunrise, then use the rest of the day for the places nearby.

Near the Taj at a glance: distance, timings and entry

Here are the main places near the Taj Mahal with their distance from it, timings and approximate entry fees. Fees are set by the Archaeological Survey of India and revised from time to time and most monuments run sunrise to sunset, so the clock times are approximate. Children under 15 enter the ticketed monuments free.

Taj night viewing: On five nights around each full moon, the full-moon night and the two before and after, the Taj opens for night viewing from 8:30 pm to 12:30 am, for up to 400 people in groups of fifty, for about half an hour each, closed Fridays and during Ramzan, booked in advance from the ASI office on Mall Road.

Right by the Taj: walkable spots

Within a short walk of the Taj Mahal itself are a few spots worth your time.

  • The Taj Museum, inside the Taj complex, about 10 am to 5 pm and closed on Fridays with the Taj, holding Mughal miniatures, manuscripts and the plans and specimens of the Taj's making; included with your Taj ticket.

  • Tajganj, the old quarter at the Taj's south gate, a warren of lanes, bazaars and rooftop cafes and hotels with fine Taj views, perfect for a meal or a sunset drink overlooking the dome; free to wander.

  • The Taj Nature Walk, about 1 km from the east gate, a quiet green reserve with paths and Taj viewpoints, open sunrise to sunset for a small fee, a peaceful escape from the crowds.

These let you linger near the Taj before or after your visit and the Tajganj rooftops in particular are the classic place to watch the sunset colour the marble once the complex itself has closed for the day.

A short drive: 2 to 8 km from the Taj

A short drive from the Taj brings you to several of Agra's greatest monuments.

  • Agra Fort, about 2.5 km, the mighty red sandstone fortress-palace, open daily sunrise to sunset, roughly 6 am to 6 pm, entry about 50 rupees for Indians and 650 for foreigners; the classic pairing with the Taj, with poignant Taj views from its marble towers.

  • The Itmad-ud-Daulah, or Baby Taj, about 6 km on the north bank, a jewel-box marble tomb that inspired the Taj, open sunrise to sunset, entry about 30 and 310 rupees, quiet and exquisite.

  • Mehtab Bagh, about 7 km, the garden directly across the Yamuna from the Taj, open sunrise to sunset, entry about 30 and 300 rupees, the finest sunset Taj view and the answer to a Friday.

  • Jama Masjid and Mankameshwar Temple, about 3 km, the grand mosque opposite the fort and one of Agra's ancient Shiva temples, both free; and Chini ka Rauza and Ram Bagh, about 7 to 9 km on the north bank, a Persian tiled tomb and India's oldest Mughal garden.

The north-bank cluster, the Baby Taj, Mehtab Bagh, Chini ka Rauza and Ram Bagh, makes a lovely half-day together, quieter than the Taj and full of beauty, ending with the sunset view from Mehtab Bagh.

A little further: 10 to 20 km from the Taj

A little further out lie some rewarding, less-crowded sights.

  • Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra, about 13 km north-west on the Mathura Road, the grand mausoleum of the emperor Akbar in a vast deer-filled garden, open sunrise to sunset, entry about 35 and 300 rupees, serene and spacious.

  • Mariam's Tomb, about 12 km near Sikandra, the quieter mausoleum of Akbar's wife and the Radhasoami samadhi at Soami Bagh, about 13 km, with its extraordinary, still-unfinished marble carving.

  • Guru ka Taal, about 13 km, a historic Sikh gurudwara near Sikandra, welcoming and free and Wildlife SOS, about 17 km, an ethical bear and elephant rescue sanctuary, a humane alternative to exploitative animal attractions.

  • Sur Sarovar, or Keetham Lake, about 20 km, a bird sanctuary rich in resident and migratory birds, a green and peaceful outing.

Being on the Mathura Road, the Sikandra cluster is a natural stop when travelling on toward Mathura and Vrindavan, letting you combine Akbar's Tomb and Krishna's land in one direction.

Day trips near the Taj: 35 to 60 km

Within an hour or two of the Taj lie some of the finest day trips in northern India.

  • Fatehpur Sikri, about 40 km west, Akbar's magnificent abandoned red sandstone capital, a UNESCO site with the Buland Darwaza and Salim Chishti's tomb, open sunrise to sunset, entry about 50 and 610 rupees; allow half a day with the drive.

  • Mathura and Vrindavan, about 55 to 65 km north, the birthplace and childhood land of Krishna, one of the holiest pilgrimage regions in India, covered below.

  • Keoladeo National Park at Bharatpur, about 55 km in Rajasthan, a world-famous bird sanctuary and UNESCO site, wonderful in winter for migratory birds.

  • The town of Deeg, with its Mughal-style water palace and the fort of Bharatpur, both a similar distance into Rajasthan, for those with more time.

Fatehpur Sikri combines naturally with the road toward Jaipur, while Mathura and Vrindavan lie the other way, toward Delhi. Either makes a superb full day beyond the Taj.

Mathura and Vrindavan: the birthplace of Krishna near the Taj

The most rewarding day trip near the Taj Mahal, for many, is to Mathura and Vrindavan, the twin sacred cities about 55 to 65 km north of Agra, revered as the birthplace and childhood home of Krishna and among the holiest pilgrimage places in India. Where the Taj is a monument to see, Mathura and Vrindavan are living sacred cities to experience, with thousands of temples, the sacred Yamuna and its ghats and an atmosphere of devotion found nowhere else.

In Mathura, the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi marks Krishna's birthplace, with the Dwarkadhish temple and the beautiful evening Yamuna aarti at Vishram Ghat; in Vrindavan, the famous Banke Bihari, ISKCON and Prem Mandir temples draw pilgrims from across the world. It is about an hour and a quarter by road, an easy day trip. Our places to visit in mathura guide covers the sacred cities in full and our agra to vrindavan distance guide the routes from Agra.

Combining the Taj with Krishna's land makes a profound contrast, the world's greatest monument to love and the living land of Krishna's love and it is easily arranged. Our golden triangle with mathura vrindavan guide covers folding Mathura and Vrindavan into an Agra or wider trip and our best time to visit vrindavan mathura guide the seasons, which match Agra's own.

The best time to visit

The best time to visit the Taj Mahal and everything near it is October to March, when the weather is pleasant and sightseeing is comfortable, avoiding the fierce summer heat of April to June. Within the day, come to the Taj at sunrise for the softest light, the smallest crowds and the coolest air; the marble changes colour beautifully through the day. Sunset, best enjoyed from Mehtab Bagh or a Tajganj rooftop, is the other magical hour.

One honest seasonal note: in December and January, dense morning fog can veil the Taj and delay trains and flights, though it usually lifts by mid-morning. Otherwise the cool season is ideal and it is the same window that suits a Mathura and Vrindavan day trip, so the two combine perfectly.

How to reach the Taj Mahal and get around

The Taj Mahal stands in Tajganj on the south bank of the Yamuna in Agra. Agra is about 230 km from Delhi, roughly three to four hours by the Yamuna Expressway or two hours by fast train to Agra Cantt, the main station, about 6 km from the Taj; it is about 240 km from Jaipur and 55 km from Mathura. The Taj has three gates, east, west and south, with the east and west selling tickets and the south, in Tajganj, often quietest.

Crucially, the Taj sits in a protected eco-zone where petrol and diesel vehicles are barred, so you are dropped a little away and cover the last stretch on foot, by electric bus or by e-rickshaw; allow a little extra time. Getting between the nearby sights is easy by taxi, auto or e-rickshaw. For reaching Mathura and Vrindavan nearby, see our agra to vrindavan distance guide.

Honest tips for visiting the Taj and nearby

A few honest tips make the whole area easier to enjoy.

  • The Taj is closed on Fridays; plan your Taj visit for another day and use Friday for the nearby monuments and the Mehtab Bagh view.

  • Book Taj and monument tickets online in advance to skip the queues and carry your original photo ID, which is checked.

  • Ignore the touts, unofficial guides and photographers at the gates; hire only a licensed guide and agree the price first.

  • Be firm about not being taken to commission-paying marble or handicraft emporiums, a common way sightseeing gets cut short.

  • Come at sunrise, both for the light and to have the rest of the day free for the places nearby.

With a little planning, an early start and a firm, friendly no to the touts, the Taj and everything around it become one of the great experiences of any India trip.
