Prem Mandir to Banke Bihari Distance: KM & Route

By Gurudutt, Experience My India·19 April 2026

Distance Between Prem Mandir to Banke Bihari Mandir Vrindavan

Quick Answer

The Prem Mandir to Banke Bihari Mandir distance in Vrindavan is 2.4 to 2.8 km, depending on the route. Experience My India clocks it at about 19 to 21 minutes by e-rickshaw or auto in normal traffic and 30 to 40 minutes on foot. Both temples are close enough to cover comfortably in one day.

Quick Enquiry

How far is Prem Mandir to Banke Bihari Mandir?

Prem Mandir to Banke Bihari Mandir is 2.4 to 2.8 km, so no single number is wrong; it depends on which road your driver takes. In normal traffic the ride is about 19 to 21 minutes by e-rickshaw or auto and it can stretch to 30 minutes in the evening or on festival days. On foot it is a comfortable 30 to 40 minutes through the heart of old Vrindavan.

The figure moves because Vrindavan is a maze of lanes and the shortest line on a map is rarely the line a vehicle can actually drive. What matters more than the exact kilometre is the plan and that is where most visitors lose an hour they did not need to. For the temples themselves, see our full Prem Mandir and Banke Bihari Temple guides.

Want it planned for you? Our one-day Vrindavan darshan handles the transport, the queue and the timing. See the one-day Vrindavan tour or WhatsApp us on +91 7302265809.

Banke Bihari to Prem Mandir Distance and Travel Time

The Banke Bihari to Prem Mandir distance is the same 2.4 to 2.8 km in reverse, because it is the same road. Only your timing strategy changes with direction, not the length.

By e-rickshaw

An e-rickshaw is the most common and cheapest way to cover the Banke Bihari to Prem Mandir distance, about 19 to 21 minutes in normal traffic. A shared seat is roughly 20 to 50 rupees per person and a private e-rickshaw is roughly 100 to 150 rupees, so agree the fare before you sit. It reaches Prem Mandir's main gate easily, since the approach roads there are open. Coming the other way, it drops you at the edge of the Banke Bihari lane network and you walk the last part.

By auto or cab

A shared or private auto takes a similar 19 to 21 minutes and typically costs about 100 to 200 rupees depending on your negotiation and is worth it in summer heat or with elderly travellers. A private cab makes sense only inside a larger day plan, since it still parks away from Banke Bihari and waits.

On foot

Walking the route takes 30 to 40 minutes and is the better experience outside peak heat. You pass sweet shops, bhajan stalls and the everyday rhythm of Vrindavan that you miss from a vehicle. Wear slip-on footwear, since you remove it near the temples anyway. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour Package  or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

What it costs

The Prem Mandir to Banke Bihari trip is cheap whichever way you travel. These are typical current rates and they are always negotiable, so agree the price before you start.

Banke Bihari Mandir to Prem Mandir Distance by Route

There are two practical routes and the right one depends on whether you value speed or the walk.

Via Bhaktivedanta Swami Marg (shortest)

This is the shortest route at about 2.4 km and roughly 19 minutes. Most travellers prefer it because it trims a little time, but it also runs through narrower stretches, so it can slow in peak hours.

Via Bhanumati Rd / Sri Premanand Rd

The alternate route runs about 2.8 km and roughly 21 minutes on slightly wider, busier roads. Choose it when it is hot, when you are short on time or when you are travelling with seniors or young children.

Why the final approach to Banke Bihari is on foot

Here is the detail most guides skip. As you get close to Banke Bihari Temple the lanes narrow and the crowd thickens and vehicles slow to the point where walking is faster. Autos and e-rickshaws stall near the temple lanes, so however you travel, plan for the final approach to Banke Bihari to be on foot. This is why the distance often feels longer than the map suggests.

Prem Mandir to Banke Bihari Distance: the best order to visit

Because the distance is short, the smart question is not how to travel it but when. The two temples peak at opposite times and getting the order right is the difference between a calm darshan and a crush.

Morning at Banke Bihari, evening at Prem Mandir

Visit Banke Bihari Temple in the morning, soon after it opens at 7:45 AM, when queues are shortest. Both temples then close in the middle of the day, roughly from noon, so use that window to travel the short distance between them or to eat, not for darshan. Prem Mandir reopens at 4:30 PM and is built for the evening, when the white marble is lit and the light show runs; see our Prem Mandir light show guide for the current show timing. In this order you travel the distance once, at a relaxed midday pace, instead of fighting both crowds at once.

You can open the route in Google Maps for live directions. Neither temple charges an entry fee, both are free. Note that Banke Bihari has strict phone and bag rules and shoes must be left outside, so travel light; the full list is in our Banke Bihari dress code and phone rules guide.

Is the route doable with kids or elderly parents?

Yes, comfortably, if you pick the vehicle and the hour. The distance is short, so with children or elderly parents take an auto or private e-rickshaw on the wider Bhanumati Rd route, go mid-morning or after the evening peak eases and accept that the final approach to Banke Bihari is a short walk for everyone. Keep water and a cap in summer. For a fuller plan, see our guides on visiting Mathura Vrindavan with kids and with elderly parents or our senior citizen tour packages that handle the pace for you. What the route actually feels like

I have made this walk more times than I can count and my honest advice is to walk it once and ride it once. Leaving Prem Mandir in the late afternoon, the route is a slow unfolding of Vrindavan: a man frying jalebi, a group singing to a harmonium, a cow deciding it owns the lane. The distance never feels like 2.5 km because something stops you every hundred metres.

Not for you if you are in a hurry, travelling with someone who cannot manage uneven lanes or visiting on a festival day, when even this short distance can double in time. On those days take the e-rickshaw on the wider road and accept the short walk at the end.

"We booked the Same Day Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package because we wanted to visit both cities in one day. The timing was planned well, especially because the main temples have different darshan windows. We visited Banke Bihari Temple in the morning and kept Prem Mandir for the evening, when the temple looks especially beautiful after reopening. The short distance between the two made it easy to include both without unnecessary travel. We also liked having an e-rickshaw for the narrower Vrindavan lanes."

"Our 2 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package was a comfortable choice for our family. We spent proper time at Banke Bihari, Prem Mandir, ISKCON and Nidhivan in Vrindavan and then explored Mathura. The schedule allowed us to avoid the midday temple closures and return for evening darshan instead of rushing. We especially appreciated the local transport because vehicles cannot go right up to Banke Bihari Temple. The final approach through the narrow lanes was easier on foot."

"We chose the 3 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package because we wanted a relaxed Braj pilgrimage rather than simply visiting a few famous temples. We spent time at Banke Bihari, Prem Mandir, ISKCON, Nidhivan and Seva Kunj, then covered Mathura and nearby places. Having three days meant we could follow the better order of visiting Banke Bihari in the morning and Prem Mandir in the evening, rather than trying to fit both into the same crowded time window. The extra time also made walking through Vrindavan's old lanes much more enjoyable."
