Krishna Janmabhoomi darshan runs in a morning session and an evening session split by an afternoon closure and the exact hours change with the season. In summer the temple opens at 5:00 AM and the evening session runs until about 9:30 PM. In winter it opens a little later and closes a little earlier. Entry is free for everyone and the hours are the same every day of the week, Sunday included.

The Krishna Janmabhoomi temple opening time is 5:00 AM in summer and 5:30 AM in winter and the temple then closes in the middle of the day after the noon aarti before reopening for the evening. This afternoon break is the single detail that catches out the most pilgrims.

• Summer opening: 5:00 AM. Winter opening: 5:30 AM.

• Summer afternoon closure: 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

• Winter afternoon closure: 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

Many pilgrims arrive by cab or auto from Delhi or Agra in the early afternoon, reach the gate between 1:00 PM and 3:30 PM and find it locked. If you land in Mathura inside that window, use it for lunch, a Vishram Ghat visit or a peda run and time the temple for the evening reopening. Arriving fifteen to twenty minutes before reopening usually gets you in ahead of the queue that builds at the entrance.

Krishna Janmabhoomi follows a five-aarti daily routine, from the pre-dawn Mangal Aarti to the Shayan Aarti that closes the day. Each marks a different moment in the Lord's day and attending even one is considered fortunate.

The dawn Mangal Aarti at 5:30 AM is the most peaceful darshan of the day, with the temple just opened and a fraction of the crowd it carries by 8:00 AM. The evening Sandhya Aarti is the fuller, more emotional one, with lamps, bells and chants filling the stone courtyard.

Is Krishna Janmabhoomi open today?

On normal days Krishna Janmabhoomi is open today on the seasonal schedule above, morning and evening with the afternoon closure, every day of the week including Sunday. The hours change only on festivals and some Ekadashi days. On Janmashtami the temple stays open close to round the clock and Holi and Radhashtami also extend the hours and swell the crowds. Janmashtami at Krishna Janmabhoomi

Janmashtami is the biggest event in Mathura's calendar and in 2026 it falls on 4 September, with the celebration peaking at the midnight birth hour and continuing into the early morning of 5 September. The focal point is the midnight Abhishek at 12:00 AM, when the deity is bathed in Panchamrit of milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar, marking the exact moment of Krishna's birth in Kansa's prison. The complex is illuminated from about 8:00 PM, bhajans and Rasa Lila run through the night and Nandotsav, the joyous morning-after celebration, follows on 5 September.

If you plan a Janmashtami darshan, plan it carefully. Vehicle entry within about 3 km of the temple is stopped from 8:00 PM on 4 September, so expect to walk the last stretch, reach the complex by around 10:00 PM before the outer gate closes to new entrants and allow three to five hours in the queue for standard entry. A guided visit is the difference between reaching the midnight aarti and missing it.

Entry fee, security rules and what you cannot carry inside

Entry to Krishna Janmabhoomi is free for everyone, with no ticket for general darshan, but security is among the strictest in Braj because the complex shares a wall with the adjacent Shahi Idgah. Getting stopped at the gate for a phone or a bag costs fifteen to thirty minutes and sometimes the whole morning session, so plan to travel light.

• Mobile phones, cameras and all electronics must be deposited at the cloakroom counter outside. There is a charge of about ₹2 per device, so carry small change.

• Bags, purses and leather items such as belts and wallets are best left behind. Small cloth bags may be allowed, checked at the gate.

• Footwear is removed at the shoe counter outside. Drinking water is available free inside.

• Every visitor passes a metal detector and a security check. Carry a valid photo ID.

• Photography of the deity and the Garbha Griha is not allowed. Modest, traditional clothing that covers the shoulders and knees is expected and non-Hindu visitors are welcome.

Give yourself sixty to ninety minutes inside the complex on a normal day, longer on weekends and festivals. Lockers and cloakrooms outside hold your phone and belongings while you are in. Elderly and wheelchair-using pilgrims can ask for assistance at the gate; the marble and the carpet inside can be slippery, so an accompanying hand helps.

Best time to visit Krishna Janmabhoomi

The best time to visit Krishna Janmabhoomi is early morning between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM or the evening between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM, when the crowds are thinner and the darshan is calmer. Morning is the quieter, more inward darshan; evening is warmer and busier around the Sandhya Aarti. Across the year, October to March is the most comfortable season to travel in Mathura, while summers are hot and the monsoon is heavy. Come for Janmashtami in August or September if you want the temple at its most alive and expect very large crowds in return.

Mathura is well connected by rail and road and most pilgrims reach the temple from Mathura Junction in under fifteen minutes.

By train: Mathura Junction is the nearest station, about 3 km away, with direct trains from Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and many other cities. From Delhi the fastest trains take about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours.

By road: Delhi to Mathura is about 160 km, roughly 3 to 3.5 hours on the Yamuna Expressway. Agra is about 55 km via NH-19, around 1.5 hours.

By air: Delhi International Airport is about 160 km and Agra airport is the closest at about 55 km.

Inside the complex: what makes Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi special

Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi is built around the prison cell believed to be the exact spot where Krishna was born, which is why devotees stand longer here than at any other temple in Braj. Tradition holds that Devaki and Vasudeva were imprisoned at this site by Kansa and that their eighth child, born at midnight, was Lord Krishna. That prison cell is today the Garbha Griha, the womb chamber, at the centre of the complex, with the main sanctum built above it. The complex also holds the Keshavdev Temple, the Bhagavata Bhavan with a museum of exhibits on Krishna's life, a large courtyard and several smaller shrines. Ground truth: what nobody tells first-time visitors

After guiding more than 50,000 pilgrims through this temple since 2018, here are the realities most guides soften or skip.

The security check takes longer than you expect, especially with a group. Each person passes a metal detector, deposits shoes separately and checks in a phone individually at the cloakroom. For a group of four, even moving smoothly, that is twenty to thirty minutes and on festival weekends add another thirty to forty-five.

The Rajbhog crowd near 11:30 AM is the most intense moment of the day. Everyone tries to finish with the noon aarti, so the lanes toward the Garbha Griha fill fast and on weekends guards stop entry near the sanctum around 11:45 AM. Be inside by 11:00 AM if you want the noon darshan.

The Garbha Griha itself is a small, low chamber and during festival weekends, Janmashtami and Ekadashi, the queue moves through in as little as thirty to sixty seconds. Do not plan to linger there on a peak day.

Two small things save money and time. The Bhagavata Bhavan museum inside the complex is missed by most visitors and is worth the thirty to forty minutes and the small ticket. And Mathura peda is cheaper and just as fresh at the Brijwasi shop across from the main gate than from the stalls inside.

Planning your Mathura darshan around the closure

Here is what I tell every pilgrim. Come for the Mangal Aarti at 5:30 AM if you can, when the courtyard is quiet and the stone is still cool and pair it with Dwarkadhish and Vishram Ghat a short auto ride away before noon. Deposit your phone at the cloakroom before you queue, not after, with ₹2 in change ready. If you can only come in the afternoon, do not arrive at 1:00 PM to a shut gate; come at reopening and give the evening to Vrindavan. This temple is not for you if you dislike crowds at festival time, because Janmashtami here is overwhelming by design. On an ordinary weekday morning, it is one of the calmest and most moving darshans in all of Braj.
