Barsana Ropeway: Route, Tickets and Timings

By Gurudutt, Experience My India·24 October 2026

Barsana Ropeway

Quick Answer

The Barsana Ropeway (officially the Shree Radha Rani Ropeway) is a short cable-car link connecting a base station near the Bhadai Baba Gaushala / Mansi Ganga Kund area to the hilltop Shri Radha Rani Temple (Ladli Ji Mandir) in Barsana. It lets elderly, disabled and young devotees avoid climbing the 250 to 350 steep steps to the temple. The track is about 210 metres and a one-way ride takes roughly 2 to 5 minutes, instead of a 20 to 30 minute uphill climb; each enclosed gondola seats up to 6. Current fares are about 100 rupees round trip and 60 rupees one-way, bought at the station counters (no online booking at present). It runs daily matching temple hours, usually pausing midday. Always confirm current fares and timings at the station, as these change.

Quick Enquiry

The ropeway has been a real blessing for Barsana, especially for the elderly parents and grandparents I bring here. Those 250-plus steps up to Ladli Ji are hard for many, and now a two-minute ride takes them straight to Radha Rani’s darshan. I still love the climb myself, but for anyone who struggles with steps, this is the kindest way up. I always tell families to use it for the elders and meet them at the top. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour Packages  or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Route and key specifications

The ropeway runs directly from the lower base station to the hilltop temple, a simple there-and-back link rather than a long cable car.

Specification

Detail (confirm locally)

Official name

Shree Radha Rani Ropeway

Route

Lower / base station (near Bhadai Baba Gaushala / Mansi Ganga Kund area) to the upper station at the hilltop Shri Radha Rani (Ladli Ji) Temple

Track distance

About 210 metres

Ride time

Roughly 2 to 5 minutes one-way (versus a 20 to 30 minute climb)

Gondola capacity

Up to 6 passengers per enclosed cabin

Steps saved

Around 250 to 350 steep concrete stairs

The upper station sits right at the shri radha rani temple (Ladli Ji Mandir), so you step off the ropeway almost at the darshan, which is what makes it so convenient for those who cannot manage the stairs.

Because it is a short, enclosed, point-to-point link rather than a long aerial tramway, the ropeway is simple and reassuring to use. There is a lower station at the base of the hill and an upper station at the top, with cabins running continuously between them, so there is no interchange, no long exposed stretch and no complicated boarding. For anyone who has ridden a hill-station cable car and found it daunting, this is a far gentler affair, over almost as soon as it has begun.

Barsana, Radha Rani and the hill the ropeway climbs

To understand why a ropeway here matters so much, it helps to know what sits at the top. Barsana is revered as the home of Radha Rani, worshipped here as Ladli Ji, the beloved daughter of King Vrishabhanu and the hilltop Shri Radha Rani Temple is her principal shrine and the devotional heart of the town. For devotees of the Radha tradition, reaching this darshan is one of the high points of a Braj pilgrimage, which is exactly why making it accessible to everyone and not only the able-bodied, is felt to be such a kindness.

The temple stands on one of Barsana’s hills, part of a ridge that tradition links to the divine. Barsana’s hills are, by lore, associated with the form of the Lord himself and the town’s four peaks carry their own stories; the climb up to Ladli Ji on its steep flight of stone steps has always been part of the pilgrim’s effort. The ropeway does not replace that tradition, the steps remain and many still walk them as an act of devotion, but it adds a path for those whose bodies cannot take the climb, so that age or illness need no longer stand between a devotee and Radha Rani’s darshan.

Seen this way, the Shree Radha Rani Ropeway is less a tourist attraction than a piece of devotional infrastructure. It belongs to the same spirit that, across Braj, tries to make the dham reachable for all and it is best approached in that frame: a quiet, practical blessing that carries grandmothers and grandfathers up to the goddess they have come so far to see. That is certainly how it is regarded locally and how most pilgrims come to feel about it once they have used it for an elder in their family.

Ticket prices

Tickets are bought directly at the physical counters at both the upper and lower stations. Online booking is not available at present.

Ticket

Price (current, confirm at counter)

Round trip (aana-jaana)

About 100 rupees per person

One-way

About 60 rupees per person

Children

Above 5 years of age require a full ticket

Fares for a facility like this can change over time and there is no online booking to lock a price, so treat these as current guidance and confirm the actual fares at the station counter on the day. Carry cash, as small counters may not always accept cards.

Timings and operational hours

The ropeway generally operates daily, matching the temple’s darshan hours and typically pauses in the afternoon in line with the usual Braj midday temple break. Because exact operating hours can shift with the season, temple timings, festivals, maintenance and weather, it is best to confirm the current schedule locally or at the station before you plan around it. On very busy festival days such as Radhashtami, expect queues at the ropeway as well as at the temple.

A sensible rule of thumb is that if the temple is open for darshan, the ropeway is usually running and if the temple has closed for its midday rest, the ropeway will likely be paused too. But treat that only as a guide. Like any mechanical lift, it can be stopped for scheduled maintenance, a technical fault, high winds or heavy rain, none of which follow a published calendar, so a quick check on the day is wise. This matters most if someone in your group is depending on the ropeway rather than the steps: build in the possibility that it may not be running at the exact hour you arrive and keep the stairs in mind as a fallback so no one is left stranded at the base. All timings here are general patterns rather than a guaranteed schedule, so confirm locally.

Who the ropeway helps most

The ropeway was built specifically to help those who find the climb difficult and that is where it matters most.

  • Elderly pilgrims. For grandparents and older devotees, the 250 to 350 steep steps can be a real barrier; the ropeway brings them to Ladli Ji’s darshan in minutes.

  • Those with disabilities or limited mobility. It opens up the hilltop temple to many who otherwise could not reach it.

  • Families with young children. It spares little ones (and the adults carrying them) the long, steep climb.

  • Anyone short on time or energy. On a hot day or a packed itinerary, the quick ride up and down saves both.

Those who are able and wish to can still walk the steps, which many pilgrims consider part of the devotion; the ropeway simply makes Radha Rani’s darshan possible for everyone.

What the ride and the stations are like

The experience itself is short and simple, which is part of its appeal. At the lower station you buy your ticket at the counter, join the short queue and wait for the next cabin to come round. The enclosed gondolas keep cycling, so even when there is a line it tends to move steadily. Staff help passengers board, which is reassuring for an elderly or unsteady traveller and a younger family member can ride alongside to help, up to the cabin’s capacity of around six. Once you are in and the door is closed, the cabin lifts away smoothly and you are at the top in a couple of minutes.

The ride gives a brief, pleasant view over Barsana’s rooftops and the surrounding plains as you rise, a small bonus that the steps do not easily offer, since on foot you are usually watching where to place your feet. At the upper station you step out almost at the temple precinct, so there is very little further walking to reach the darshan, which is exactly the point for those who struggle with stairs. Coming down is the same in reverse, a short, controlled descent rather than a careful pick down a long flight of steps.

A few practical tips make the visit smoother. Carry small-denomination cash for the tickets, since there is no online booking and card acceptance at a small counter cannot be relied on. Keep children seated and hold on to any loose items as you board and alight. If you are travelling as a family where some will walk and some will ride, agree a clear meeting point at the temple top beforehand, so you regroup easily; the lanes and steps can get crowded and it is easy to lose one another in the press of pilgrims on a busy day. And if you or an elder has a heart or breathing condition, the ropeway is plainly the gentler choice over the steep climb, though as always it is sensible to travel within your own comfort.

Best time to ride and avoiding the crowds

Barsana is most comfortable to visit in the cooler months, roughly October to March, when the days are mild and the hill is pleasant whether you ride or walk (confirm seasonal conditions locally). The summer months of April to June are hot, which is itself one of the strongest reasons to use the ropeway rather than toil up the steps in the heat, while the monsoon can bring slippery steps and the occasional weather stoppage on the lift. For a fuller view of the region’s seasons, see our guide to the best time to visit Vrindavan and Mathura.

Within the day, the early morning darshan hours are usually the calmest, before the day-trip crowds build and are the easiest time to ride up without a long queue. The ropeway and the temple both pause around midday, so plan your climb for the morning or the later afternoon session rather than the lunchtime gap. Weekends draw larger numbers and the great Barsana festivals, above all Radhashtami, the appearance day of Radha Rani and the famous Lathmar Holi, bring enormous crowds to the hill; on those days expect long waits at both the ropeway and the temple and confirm festival dates nearer the time. If your priority is a quiet, unhurried darshan for an elder, an ordinary weekday morning in the cool season is ideal.

How to reach the base and plan your visit

The base station is near the Bhadai Baba Gaushala / Mansi Ganga Kund area in Barsana, close to the foot of the temple hill. First reach Barsana town (roughly 50 km from Mathura, 25 km from Govardhan, about 140 km from Delhi; nearest railhead Mathura Junction, about 40 to 50 km); see our mathura to barsana distance guide. From the main Barsana market, local e-rickshaws and shared autos run to the temple-hill base, near the ropeway’s lower station.

Many visitors ride the ropeway up for darshan at Ladli Ji, then either ride back or walk down to continue the Barsana hilltop circuit, which includes maan mandir and  lower down, the kirti mandir. For the full walking route and other sites, see the barsana parikrama and places to visit in barsana guides.

Let a Brajwasi plan a comfortable Barsana visit

Barsana’s hills are steep and getting elders to Ladli Ji comfortably, timing the ropeway and covering the other shrines takes some local know-how. As Brajwasis, we build a Barsana visit that uses the ropeway for those who need it, arranges the transport to the base and guides the hilltop circuit at everyone’s pace. See our govardhan barsana tour; a shared Braj day starts from around 1499 rupees per person or we design a private plan. Message us on WhatsApp at +91-7302265809 with your dates.
