Places to Visit in Nandgaon: The Complete Guide to Krishna's Boyhood Village

By Gurudutt, Experience My India·27 July 2026

Places to Visit in Nandgaon

Quick Answer

The essential places to visit in Nandgaon are the hilltop Nand Bhavan temple, the home of Nanda Baba, the sacred Pavan Sarovar and Yashoda Kund, and Charan Pahari, the rock bearing what tradition holds are Krishna's footprints. The whole village sits on Nandishwar hill, revered as a form of Shiva. Nandgaon, where Krishna spent his boyhood, lies about 8 km from Barsana and 50 km from Mathura.

Nandgaon, Krishna's boyhood village

Nandgaon is the village of Krishna's boyhood, the home to which Nanda Baba moved the family from Gokul and Mahavan as Krishna grew and where the Lord spent the tender years of his childhood among the cowherds. Set atop Nandishwar hill, the village looks out across green fields toward Barsana and it carries a gentle, pastoral atmosphere steeped in the leelas of Krishna's youth. Its name comes from Nanda Baba himself, Krishna's foster father.

This is the complete guide to the places worth visiting in Nandgaon, with timings, location and how to see them, from the hilltop temple to the sacred tanks and the leela-sites scattered around the village. Where a place has its own detailed guide this page links you onward. For the classic village circuit, our gokul barsana nandgaon day trip guide covers Nandgaon with Barsana and Gokul together.

From the ground (Gurudutt): Nandgaon is quieter and less visited than Barsana and all the sweeter for it. The hilltop temple involves a climb, gentler than Barsana's but real, so come early in the cool of the morning, carry water and pace yourself. Then wander the sacred tanks and leela-sites unhurried; Pavan Sarovar at dawn is one of the loveliest quiet spots in all of Braj. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour  or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Nandgaon places at a glance: timings, location and entry

Here are the main places with their location and hours in one place. The hilltop temple runs a morning and evening schedule with a long midday closure, while the tanks, the forest garden and Charan Pahari are open sites accessible through the day; only on the great festivals such as Lathmar Holi do the temple schedules change.

On festival days: The one exception to these hours is the great festivals, above all Lathmar Holi, when Nandgaon is intensely crowded and the temple schedule changes with special rituals. On any ordinary day, the times above are the ones to plan around; for the fuller aarti schedule at Nand Bhavan, see its dedicated temple guide.

Nand Bhavan, the Nandrai Temple

Nand Bhavan, the Nandrai Temple, crowns the top of Nandishwar hill and is the heart of Nandgaon: it stands on the very spot where the residence of Nanda Maharaj, Krishna's foster father, is said to have been. Built in red sandstone in the nineteenth century by Raja Rupa Singh, it is revered as the only temple where Krishna's foster parents, Nanda and Yashoda, are themselves worshipped, alongside Krishna and Balarama.

Within, the deities of Krishna and Balarama stand at the centre, with Yashoda and Nanda beside them and the images of Radha, Rohini, Revati, Sudama and Krishna's friends around them, the whole family of his boyhood home. The hilltop rewards the climb with this darshan and a sweeping view across the fields toward Barsana. Darshan is in summer from 5:00 am to 2:00 pm and again from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm and in winter from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm to 8:30 pm, with the Mangala aarti at dawn, 5:00 am in summer and 6:00 am in winter. See our full nand bhavan nandgaon temple guide for the fuller aarti schedule.

Nandishwar hill and Nandishwar Mahadev

The hill on which Nandgaon stands is itself sacred, revered as Nandishwar, a form of Lord Shiva. By tradition, Shiva wished to witness the childhood leelas of Krishna and took the form of this very hill so that Krishna's boyhood home would rest upon him, which is why pilgrims revere the ground itself. A shivalinga is worshipped at the Nandishwar Mahadev temple, also known as Asheshwar Mahadev, on the hill.

This gives Nandgaon a beautiful double devotion, to Krishna's boyhood and to Shiva as the hill that cradles it and it is a reminder, as across Braj, that the land honours Shiva alongside Krishna. Pause at the Nandishwar Mahadev on your way to or from the Nand Bhavan darshan. We share the tradition of the hill as the cherished belief it is.

Pavan Sarovar and Uddhav Kyari

Below the hill lies Pavan Sarovar, a serene sacred tank and one of the loveliest quiet spots in all of Braj, especially at dawn when the light is soft on the water. By tradition, Krishna would bring the cows here to bathe after they returned from grazing and devotees hold that one who bathes here with devotion is blessed with the darshan of Krishna, Nanda and Yashoda. It is a place to sit and be still.

Beside it is Uddhav Kyari, the garden linked in tradition with Uddhava, Krishna's friend and messenger, who came here and, humbled by the pure love of the gopis, longed to be even a blade of grass in Braj. It is a peaceful, green, contemplative spot. Together, Pavan Sarovar and Uddhav Kyari are the gentle, meditative heart of Nandgaon, away from the climb and the crowds.

Yashoda Kund

Yashoda Kund is the sacred tank of Yashoda, Krishna's foster mother, where by tradition she would bathe the child Krishna. It is also cherished as a place where Radha would come to the bank each morning to cook for Krishna, drawing water from a well here. These tender domestic leelas of Krishna's boyhood give the kund a gentle, intimate character.

Calm and less visited, it is a lovely spot for quiet reflection on the everyday, human side of Krishna's childhood, the bathing, the cooking, the care of a mother, that Nandgaon holds so dear. Like the other kunds it is an open site, best visited in the peaceful early morning or the soft light of evening.

Charan Pahari

Charan Pahari, on the south-west side of Nandgaon about a kilometre from Pavan Sarovar on the road toward Kamyavan, is a rocky hillock revered for bearing what tradition holds are the footprints of Krishna and the hoof-marks of his cows, pressed into the rock during his boyhood here. Devotees come to see these impressions, which by tradition can still be made out today.

It is a quiet, atmospheric site that draws a steady stream of pilgrims, tied to the tradition that Krishna played his flute here and that the rock softened at his touch. We share this as the cherished belief it is, held with reverence rather than asserted as fact. Combine it with Pavan Sarovar nearby and visit in the cooler hours, since it is an open, exposed rock site.

Kadamb Khandi, Terakadamba and the kunds

Several more leela-sites reward the unhurried visitor around Nandgaon.

  • Kadamb Khandi, a grove of the kadamb trees so loved in the Krishna stories, where by tradition Krishna played his flute among the cows.

  • Terakadamba, between Nandgaon and Javat, a serene grove revered as a place where Krishna grazed the cows and, later, as a bhajan sthali of Rupa Goswami, one of the Six Goswamis.

  • The many kunds around the village, including Moti Kund, Prabhu Kund and Lalita Kund, each with its own quiet association with the boyhood leelas.

  • Khelanvan, the forest of play, where Krishna and his cowherd friends are said to have played their games.

None of these is grand; their beauty is in their quiet and their stories and in the pastoral landscape of fields, groves and tanks that still feels close to the Braj of Krishna's boyhood. Give Nandgaon time to wander and it rewards you far more than a hurried temple visit.

Nearby: Barsana, Javat and beyond

Nandgaon sits within easy reach of several more Braj sites and combining them makes a full day.

  • Barsana, the village of Radha Rani, about 8 km away, paired with Nandgaon through the famous Lathmar Holi; see our places to visit in barsana guide.

  • Javat, the village near Nandgaon revered as the home where Radha lived after her marriage, a quieter devotional stop, near Terakadamba.

  • Kokilavan, the forest sanctuary of Shani Dev and Kamyavan, one of the great forests of Braj, both within reach.

  • Govardhan, about 25 km away and the wider Braj circuit, with Mathura and Vrindavan around 45 to 50 km.

Because Nandgaon and Barsana face each other across the fields, they are almost always visited together and a little sequencing folds in Govardhan or the nearby forests. Our places to visit in mathura guide covers the Mathura side of Braj for a fuller trip.

How to reach Nandgaon and get around

Nandgaon is reached as part of a Braj circuit, lying out to the west with Barsana.

  • By road, Nandgaon is about 8 km from Barsana, roughly 50 km from Mathura and about 45 km from Vrindavan and around 25 km from Govardhan, easily reached by taxi as a day trip.

  • The nearest major railhead is Mathura Junction, with Kosi Kalan closer, from where you take a taxi or local transport onward.

  • The nearest airports are Agra, around 110 km and Delhi, roughly 130 to 160 km, each followed by a road transfer.

Within Nandgaon, the hilltop temple is reached on foot by a climb of steps, while short auto or e-rickshaw hops connect the tanks, Charan Pahari and the leela-sites around the village. Wear comfortable shoes and carry water. For getting into the region, see our how to reach vrindavan guide and for the darshan hours across Braj our mathura vrindavan temple timings page.

Best time, festivals and planning

The best time to visit Nandgaon is October to March, for pleasant weather and a comfortable climb, with dawn at Pavan Sarovar and the golden hour from the hilltop especially lovely. Nandgaon's most famous festival is its day of Lathmar Holi, when, the day after the Barsana celebration, the men of Nandgaon and the women of Barsana play in reverse, one of the great events of the Braj Holi season. Janmashtami and the Holi season generally are also special, all bringing crowds. For dates, see our braj festival calendar; for the honest Holi crowd picture.

A good half day covers Nand Bhavan and the hilltop, Pavan Sarovar and Uddhav Kyari, Yashoda Kund and Charan Pahari and pairing it with Barsana across the fields fills a western-Braj day. Plan around the darshan hours and the climb and do not rush; Nandgaon's gift is its pastoral calm.

We arrange Nandgaon as part of a Braj circuit, timed around the darshan hours and sequenced with Barsana and the western vans so you are never doubling back. A shared day tour starts from around ₹1,499 per person and our same-day govardhan barsana tour covers this side of Braj, with darshan free throughout. Message me on WhatsApp at +91-7302265809 with your dates and group and I will plan it around the quiet hours and the climb.
